Do you keep a piggy bank?

DH has one of those water jugs that he puts his silver change into at the end of everyday. I don't remember how many years he had saved, but he was almost to the top and it had over $3k. Since cashing it in he started filling it again.

I have a piggy bank that I've been filling with my silver change too. I forget when I started (2002 or 2003) and I emptied it in 2007. It wasn't full, but about half way. I had a couple hundred which was really nice. I've been filling it since I emptied it and it's getting again. Nothing like having money for a rainy day.

Do you do this? How much have you saved in change over the years?

FH and I have one of those huge Coke bottle piggy banks. We throw all our change in there. Before we moved in together FH had cashed it in and it had about $1300 in it.

We do this with the change we collect daily. DH recently quit smoking. He now takes the $$ he would have spend on cigarettes and lighters and puts it into a separate jar for our boys. We figured it out last night, and the boys will have $23K+ each when they turn 18.

And to the topic at hand, nope, I don't have a piggy bank. I DO have a pile of Euros though - I'm hoping I can use them sometime soon.

Yup!! DH and I have been adding change to one of those water jug things. We emptied it out first back in 2007 for our first trip together and it gave us an extra $800 in spending money.

we have a change jug too. We throw our change from our wallets in there at the end of the day. We cashed it in right before our wedding and had $800 so we used it for all the tips.

Yes we have one too. Well I have one that I haven't touched but I really should empty it and start again since it is full.

We have a joint one -- after about a year we had close to 1k in there. Last time we emptied it is was for the HM we don't plan on cashing in again anytime soon.

DH and I have a one-gallon Poland Spring jug that we use .. he uses it more than me I think. There's not much in it - maybe it's half full - but in the past when I have emptied our change collectors, we have gotten about $125 from them. I'd like to go turn it in - we could use it for a wedding gift, or to help pay for some repairs his truck needs - but he will want it to keep building.

So glad to hear you husband quit. Can I ask you how much he smoked a day (pack wise). I keep trying to tell DH how much he can save if he quit and he doesn't believe me (even though the math is simple).

We have a metal can that we throw change into. I usually cash it in at the end of the year and put it towards buying Christmas presents; which really helps. But I didn't do it last year, so we'll see how much we've got this year!!

We have a little bank we got from Commerce and we put our change in there. When we cash it in, we usually have at least $100.

I have one of those small containers that counts the change for me. Right now I am only up to 80$. Once it's full it is getting cashed, the paper money put at the bottom and then refilling it with coins

We have a little ceramic crab bank (I got it for DH as a souvenir from Bahamas years ago) that we keep on top of our refrigerator and DH puts his change at the end of the day into it. Once it is filled up I take it to the bank (TD has one of those change machine things) and deposit it into our savings. Every little bit helps

He smoked just over a pack a day. I think it came out to something like 10 packs a week. The number above is at the current cost of cigarettes. DH says that as long as the cost does not get so outrageous, he will pay whatever the price is at that time, so that number is the lowest amount that the $$ will be. Also when it gets to $2500, we will begin getting CDs to help gain more $$ in interest for them.

I also quit 6 years ago, and that money is in their savings as well.

I started doing this when I was an apprentice. The first year I saved all my money from the tips/change from getting coffee for the guys. I saved about $1500.00 the first year. I would cash it in on my anniversary into the union (June). I hope to continue doing that when I start working again.

we have a little plastic container. When it gets to be two plastic containers we cash it in. Usually it's somewhere around $300-$400. We do it once a year or so.

We have a bank for our change also. We cashed it in about half full before our wedding and spent the money on our HM. We'll prob cash it in again before we go on our trip this year.

We have a giant beer bottle, about the size of my leg, that is probably about half full now. Dh always used to cash it in and get like 40 bucks, but I have convinced him to let it actually fill up and he's excited about it now. Hopefully it will be full by September and we can use it towards my maternity leave.

We have a large mason jar we use...once its filled we cash it in. It's usually just under $100 and takes us at least a few months to fill.

I once filled one of those popcorn cans with change. Took years & years and i had a couple grand !! Cashed that in when we were buying our house

DH filled a Poland Spring bottle with just silver change once and it came out to around $4,000. He put the money in a CD. In was a pain in the AS$ going to Commerce bank with all of that change and it took 4 trips. He says he'll never do it again.

Now we have just a small jar that we cash in once its full, about every other month and it has around $100-200. We go out to dinner or do something special with the money each time.
