How old is DD? You can try 1 oz of prune juice and see if it does the trick.

i agree with prune juice, that's what we always did. mix 1 oz prune juice with 1 oz water. it always did the trick for DS.

Re: I think poor DD is constipated, what should I do?

Quite honestly, the best cure for constipation is straight up water. I don't know how old your DD is, but if she's under 6 months old, I'd say about a half ounce in between every feeding. We would do one ounce in between each feeding and it did the trick for her, but the trick for my DD was to be consistent. The prune juice and pear juice was alway too harsh on her belly when she was really little. Now, at almost 3, she has to have enough water everyday, still.

Re: I think poor DD is constipated, what should I do?

I just BF her, I didn't for 2 days because DD had a rash and I didn't know if it's anything I ate that may of caused it, so I wanted to have whatever flush out my system before I BF her again.
Will call the ped in the morning and try prune juice if she dosesn't go tonight. DD is 7 weeks old.

thanks ladies Chat Icon

ETA: I gave her a teeny bit of warm water before BF her.

Re: I think poor DD is constipated, what should I do?

sometimes at that age the sphincter muscle goes a little wonky- this happened to DD and- this is gonna sound horrible- but I inserted the thermometer and it kicked her sphincter in and make her go right away...

you can try that- it does work - I swear it isn't cruelty or anything..

At 7 weeks I wouldn't give water or prune juice- too young, they should only be on formula or bm.

I don't think that's cruel at all, it makes sense. Spoke to the ped, he's first recommendation was to put a little vaseline on a Qtip and try to stimulate her bottom, and if that doesn't work, try a half ounce Gerber prune juice mix with equal ounce water. If she still doesn't go by Monday, to call them again, and perhaps try giving her some Mylanta.

I feel so bad that she looks so uncomfortable Chat Icon

Re: I think poor DD is constipated, what should I do?

Lay your child on their back and rub their belly gently from just above the left hip, over the belly button and down to the right hip. (Remember it's THEIR left, not yours! Chat Icon ) Do it for 5-10 minutes.

Also, do bicycle kicks. Really get those knees close to their chest.

Of course, be gentle!

you're right, at 7 weeks they're too young to drink juice, but to give it as a small supplement won't harm the baby. if they were drinking juice as a meal, that wouldn't be good. DS is 9 months old and he won't have juice for a long time (as per my choice), but he gets prune juice when it's necessaryChat Icon

1-2 oz of water Chat Icon My ped did not recommend juices until my kids were a little older...

mine did! he suggested prune juice at 2 mo... he told me the opposite from your ped Chat Icon he said DS shouldn't get straight water becuase it is stressful for his young kidneys... so I was told to mix 1 oz prune juice into a formula bottle...

ex: 2 oz water + 1 scoop formula (as usual) + 1 oz prune. we did one bottle every day until he was 4 mo, and needed 2 bottles a day like this....

Glad she pooped!

My ped also suggested pear juice mixed with water. I do 2 oz water to 1 oz pear juice and it works every time.

Re: I think poor DD is constipated, what should I do?

First make sure it's constipation - a hard BM as opposed to just not going in a while. Also, you should make sure to call your dr tomorrow cuz they all seem to recommend different things, and the doses for each thing differs on the child's age. DS is 6 weeks and at 4 or 5 weeks we tried an ounce of half prune juice and half water. That worked. I had tried that on my own per a friend's advice. When I called the dr at 5 weeks they said to do 3/4 oz of pear juice. We've been sticking with that and it's working. Apparently pear juice is less "harsh" than prune juice. Sometimes prune juice does TOO good of a job. Chat Icon

We were told 1/2 ounce water with 1/2 ounce prune juice. Works everytime! For immediate relied, tickle her tooshy hole with ther thermometer. After a few seconds or a minute she should go.

Another OP mentioned her pediatrician told her the same. I've done so on both of my kids with no problems....I can't see how 1-2 oz of plain water is more stressful than 1oz of water mixed with 1oz of prune/pear juice Chat Icon (All juices contain water) Anyways obviously different peds offer different solutions........
