Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible

I am not PG yet with #2, but DH and I were talking about how it would be close to $600 a week to have 2 in daycare. We don't see how it would be possible to pay $2,400 a month in childcare, but at the same time I make more than that a month so being a SAHM would not be possible.

With that price tag + a mortgage, I don't think we could eat Chat Icon

How does ANYONE do it??????????????

I wonder the same thing! Daycare is sooooo much money. Doesn't it get less expensive though as they get older? I guess there are other ways to save money in order to pay for daycare. You can do it, you'll just have to be creative Chat Icon

I think about this often. It's still worth it for me to work, but it's so much money!! I think when the times comes, I will either quit or look for an in-home daycare (they tend to be less expensive) or try to get a nanny (which I really don't want to do). Chat Icon

Both my sister and I have nannies because it's cheaper then care in a center when one is an infant.

i know... its scary and the reason we might not have a second kid...

when i was searching online i did find this one daycare place www.littlegiggleschildcare.com

its only $320 a week for 2 infant/kids dont know how good the place is though...

Also maybe try the ad's for people that watch the children in their home- you may find it more affordable.Chat Icon

Somehow you make it work!

Robbie and Noah were in Daycare together for 1 year. I was making very little at the time.. but somehow we made it through. We got a sibling discount and I got a grant from the YMCA because we didn't qualify for any assistance from the government. They are both in school now, but we still have challenges.. summer care is 5K for eight weeks!!!

It isn't easy.. but somehow you find a way!Chat Icon

Thanks for the tips! I was actually adding up considering my inhome lady. She charges $60 a day. I love her, she is amazing with DD. But that is $300 a week x 2! My parents help out but I don't know if they will do it when I have 2

We're thinking when the time comes the tax return will go into an account to make up the day care difference.

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible

My dh and i determined that because after childcare my takehome would be roughly 200 a week, i was better off working one shift a week instead (i have that option)...

money is tight i am not going to lie.. but we have made alot of cuts.... and i am now the coupon queen

Hi -

I look at it a different way...

I figure the 'cost' of me staying home will end up being greater in the long run. In my industry, I would probably end up having to take a pay cut if I stayed home for a few years and tried to re enter the work force.

Plus - even if daycare for 2 at a time costs a % of my income, I'm earning something.

I also see daycare as a finite expense - it ends in a few years.

I'm pretty much "glass 1/2 full" when I think about daycare. I don't mind the expense. I'm just really mad I missed enrollment for my flex account.

I've had a bad case of baby fever for months - I'll worry about daycare later.

(BTW - I can't believe how big your little girl is in the picture! - it goes fast!!)

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible

We're doing a combo nanny / family when DC#2 comes for this exact reason and I hate the idea of it Chat Icon I love the interaction DS gets from daycare but it's just impossible for us to pay for it and a mortgage, etc at the same time. I work 4 days a week, home on the 5th day so we're going to have our moms alternate 1 day a week so they're only giving us 2 days a month each to ease the burden on them. We'll then have someone come in the other three days a week. We're hoping to keep our child care costs for 2 at basically what we're paying for DS now full time at a center ($305 a week). I haven't begun looking into pricing, though, so this may all be a pipedream Chat Icon

I remember you posting how much you pay and I"m completely jealous. I've been looking and the latest one I came across charges $75 a day for PART TIME. Most of them I'm finding are $50 or so a day, which is about the going rate for a center in my area.

from my experience, in home is always cheaper than a center

I definitely struck gold with my lady, but she is really charging the going rate for here in charlotte (I spoke with like 10 other people who would have charged me the same price)

I am very lucky Chat Icon

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible

That $$$$ is the reason why i became SAHM and we CUT back tremendously..i went without a car for 2.5 years...

It just wasn't worth it to me to spend 90% of my paycheck on me work related expenses-gas, clothes, lunch, car, dry cleaning etc., that would go along with me working to bring home a couple hundred bucks.

I MISS working Terribly though!!!

No matter what you always find a way to pay for it when it comes to your kids.
I would look into at home child care, that may be a better option. Usually you can find someone who charges significantly less than the childcare centers because they don't have the overhead costs.

DH and I are really torn over the issue right now. We love the care and socialization that DS gets in daycare, and we're trying to figure out how we're going to handle the price of 2. We're still debating on getting a nanny because DS is doing so well in daycare. We have until September to finalize a plan and we're both already stressed about it!

I used to figure it out hourly to see when it would pay for me to hire someone in care & it would only be at 3 kids. 1 child came out to about $5.50/hour. Also with 2 children, I didn't want to rely on 1 person in case they got sick or needed time off.

I agree. You get the sibling discount & the cost does go down as they get older.

Re: Sad, the thought of two in daycare seems impossible

I know - I'm not looking forward to this when the time comes. I may explore a nanny but quite honestly, I still prefer a daycare facility for the interaction and checks & balances of a center system. But, the way I look at it - 2 in daycare is a temporary thing - it'll suck for a while, but evenutally someone's going to elementary school, right? Chat Icon
