About the doctor that actually delivers your baby
I totally forgot to ask my doc this today but was wondering if you ladies knew the answer to this (im sure every practice is different BUT how do the rotations/on call schedule work?)
If lets say I go into labor tomorrow night and another doctor from my obgyns practice is on call or on schedule will the "other" doctor automatically deliver my baby, or if my doctor is available he gets called even though hes not on call????
There are 2 other obgyn doctors in my doctors practice and for my next appt (23weeks) i am meeting with one of them.
Just wondering if anyone knows how this works.

I believe every practice is different.
The way my Dr does it, if she's off and there's an on-call doctor, she gets called first and decides whether the on call doctor will answer or if she'll come in (unless of course she's out of town or something). And she reassured me that 9x's out of 10 she'll come in.  HTH.

Typically whatever Dr. is on call will be the Dr. delivering your baby.
I wouldn't stress about it. I had a scheduled induction and my Dr. knew she wouldn't be on call that day (she was actually not on the call schedule at all that week), but I had to deliver DD at 39 weeks. You will not see the Dr. once you go into labor until the baby is crowning. The Dr. that delivered DD came in after I had already been pushing for 25 minutes (I only pushed for 40 minutes).

I am also with Klein and Nimaroff and was told that whoever is available on the day of delivery will be the one who does it. It's a good idea to meet with all 3 doctors, including Dr. Alkasab, during your pregnancy so you are not suprised by who ends up delivering you.

I dont kno. My OB got to the hospital shortly after I did- maybe 30 minutes later? I dont remember, but it was pretty fast, and stayed in the hospital until i had DD- about 5-6 hours. He was in and out of room during that time,checking on me, but never left once I started pushing.

there are 3 docs in my practice and I have seen all of them. They want you to see all of them b/c whoever is on call that day is who is going to deliver the baby. Good thing I like them all!

I'm curious what time of day you went into labor? That, and how many of his/her patients are in labor at the same time will definately affect how long your OB is in the hospital with you/ checking on you.
My water broke at 11pm, and we got to the hospital at midnight. The OB didnt come in until she had to (to order my epidural she had to be there in person) at 4am. None of her other patients were in labor.

went to hospitsl around 12 pm. DD born just after 5 pm.

When I was pregnant with DS, I went to a sole practitioner. So, there was a chance that the staff OB would deliver my DS.
A small reason why I was incduced the day I was was b/c my OB was due to be on call the next day, and it worked out perfectly! (and it was a SMALL part, like 1%, I had preeclampsia)

My doctor was not on call but she came and delivered my baby anyway. I think that is rare though.

I'm wondering if that was their day to do their shift at the hospital? because that's VERY rare (and unrealistic in most cases). Usually the nurse is with you almost all of the time, the resident checks on you frequently (and at the suggestion of the RN) and then the OB comes in for a few pushes and to catch it when it comes out. That's been my experience in L&D, anyway.

Within my OBGYN's office it is which ever doctor is on call that day/night...
Unfortunately we don't really get a say in who delivers our baby, unless you have a scheduled c-section and are able to get the dr. you want.

Yes, usually whoever is on call is the one to deliver.
But it's funny..I had no idea how LITTLE the doctor is involved until the very end. Your doctor will check on you once in a while but isn't really involved until pushing begins. The nurses do the majority of everything and they were so wonderful!! I loved the nurse I had, she was so warm and cheering me on..she even cried when DS was born, it was very sweet.
I would not worry about the doctor too much..I know I did and realize now it wasn't a big deal.

I don't think so - unless my cousin has something MAJOR going on, she likes to deliver her own patients ........and she is in a large practice -
My Dr. is the only one in the practice -

Most practices like you to have an appointment with all doctors/midwives that deliver. It's good to meet them because usually whoever is on call - is the person that will deliver. I had whoever was on call both times but I had met them before.

DH says this all of the time. He says that they are pretty much there to catch the baby. Of course, I'm making it sounds easier than it is but unless there's an emergency, your nurse is the one that checks on you mostly to see if you are OK. The doctor comes in maybe once an hour to see how you are progressing. The rest is seriously all you.

yes, this was my experience. My practice has 7 Drs. I had to see them all at least once during my pregnancy.
Also, it was only one nurse with me the whole day. But that depends on when you deliver too due to the labor nurses shifts. I was induced at the start of a new shift so my L&D nurse was with me the entire time. Basically it was just her and my husband with me. Mostly just my husband until I was ready to push.

I'm not sure if yours is like this but there are 7 doctors in the practice. Every time I go there, I see MY doctor. My doctor claims to deliver 75% of her patients' babies but sometimes someone else will deliver.

Your nurse will be your everything. They are the ones who are there with you every step of the way. DH and I joke around that the Dr. only comes in to catch.  So if it's not your Dr. I wouldn't worry too much. My nurse was even the one to make the call to use the vacuum extractor. DS had the cord wrapped around his neck and was basically "stuck." The nurse said to the Dr. "I think we should use the extractor." And that's what we did.

With DD, I saw every doctor in the practice. I had a scheduled induction and ended up seeing 3 doctors during my delivery since it was over 3 days (Cervadil 1 day, labored 2nd day, stopped and labored again on 3rd day). They were all great and I didn't mind at all.
