Peanut allergy prevention - Now what?!
OK, so I havn't been giving DD (11 months) anything peanut related - didn't eat peanuts while I was pg etc b/c I read that could be what is causing all these peanut allergies -
So Here I am reading Parents Magazine and it says: "Now there is evidence that avoiding peanuts at a young age may actually backfire" and that children who didn't eat foods containing peanuts during early childhood were TEN TIMES more likely to develop a peanut allergy than kids who ate peanuts before 12 months."
What the heck??? Do I now run out and get Megan to eat as many peanuts as she can?
Have you guys already talked about this? Who has given their children peanuts before 12 months and do they have allergies?

Re: Peanut allergy prevention - Now what?!
Well, I wouldn't give any infant under 12 months peanuts themselves b/c they are a major choking hazard.
DS had peanut butter at 15 months, no problems. We have no issues with it in our family. He doesn't love it (yet ) but I don't think he gets the concept of a sandwich either
Personally, I'd wait til 12 months, especially if there were no allergies in your family then I am sure she will enjoy it!

Well I gave DD peanut butter around 14 months once & then again around 16 months (against what my dr. said). I also ate peanut butter throughout my pregnancy b/c it was one of the things I craved (on apples)...no issues as of yet (at 19 months).

DC had peanuts before 12 months. Nobody in our extended family has any allergies that we know of, so we figured the risk was pretty small.

All these conflicting theories on this are driving me nuts. I am paranoid about this and don't know what to make of it all.

DD is 20 months and still hasn't had any peanut products. Guess I should try introducing it-- this is frustrating!

Re: Peanut allergy prevention - Now what?!
I have read a couple of reports like this one. Our ped recommended waiting until 3, which I thought was crazy. We decided to try peanut butter with DD and unfortunately she is allergic. I feel like there is really no way around an allergy though, so I am truly confused.

I often wonder about this too. Whomever is going to be allergic is going to be maybe, no matter how long we wait/don't wait? UGH

Regardless of the reports, my daughter's allergist still recommends that children not eat peanut products until 2. He goes further to recommend that children with known food allergies don't try it til at least 3.

I ate peanut butter my entire pregnancy, by the jarfuls... As far as introducing it to my dd I gave her some at 18 months, she didn't like it but 2 1/2 reintroduced it and she loves plain pb sandwiches with no problems...

My DS's allergist recommends the same. My DS is allergic to dairy and eggs. When I was pregnant with #2, he told me I should still eat dairy and eggs to maintain a healthy diet, but told me to limit/avoid peanuts. I'm EBF my DD now and he said I should continue to avoid it while BFing.

I know! I just don't know who to listen to anymore... DH says to ask the pediatrician, but it doesn't seem like anyone really knows....
