Multiple-basin sinks: worth it?

We're still in the early planning stages for a new kitchen, so we're still gathering info on almost everything.

Does anyone have a multiple basin sink, and do you actually use the extra basins?

Either two that are nearly the same size, or one big one, and one or more smaller ones?

Yes. I hate having a single-basin sink, and when we redo our kitchen, I'm getting a double sink. You can use one side for washing veggies/fruit or straining pasta and the other for dishes that need to be washed.

I have two . The second part is pretty small and therefor kind of useless, however I don't have any children and I think this may be suitable for bottles, etc.

we were going to get one very large (wide) sink basin....but it didn't look like it was going to fit right with our cabinet, so we returned it.....I wish we would have kept it and tried to make it work!! I would definitely go for the 1 large sink basin....I like the 2 basins as well, but could see how it might be annoying if you have a large pot your washing and don't have enough room.

I would def. get one for the reason another poster said. Having one side for dishes that need to go in the dishwasher but the dishwasher isn't ready and the other side for something else, like draining pasta or washing food.

I feel the total opposite

I really felt having a double sink you didnt get as much room as one big sink

I LOVE having a jumbo sink, i can really pile a lot of dishes and pots and pans and it doesnt even look full

I have a kohler large D bowl sink and its honestly the first thing people ooo and aaah over when they are in my kitchen

We have a double sink (both the same size) one has a drain and the other a food compactor. I find it is useful...I would go for it. HTH

we have one, and i like it. ours is one big side, and one small side. I use the small side to put empty bottles and cans in that have to go for recycling. we don't have a recycling container in the kitchen (its in the garage)... so i put the bottles and cans in there, and then once a day carry them out the garage.
its nice to have one smaller section for "other" stuff like that...

We are in the middle of a kitchen relocation and our new sink will be a double basin, equal sizes. I cannot wait! I grew up with a double basin and we always had a clean side and dirty side. I never was a fan of the countertop dish drying racks or soggy wet towel to put dishes on.

I'm terrible with chores so I'd totally let a full size sink fill up before I'd do the dishes! Doing dishes is my least favorite!

My parents have a double sink in their house in Vegas and I love it. Both sides are the same size. When we do our kitchen over ( at least a good 5-7 years from now! ) I am definitely going to try to fit them in.

If and when we redo our kitchen I'd seriously consider this style - I like that you can fill one side with soapy water and still have a side for rinsing, but you have the versatility of a larger sink for long handled pans and soaking.

Kohler has these in rectangular and kidney shape options.

I have a single sink now and it's nice and deep but had double in the past and I really prefer the double. You can wash on one side and rinse on the other side. While cooking big meals, you can have the dirty dishes on one side "soaking" while you can still use the other side for veggy prep, washing other dishes, etc...

We have a double undermount sink with one side smaller than the other. We use the big side to clean the dirty dishes and the other side we put the clean dishes in to dry. Like the above poster said too, it's great when cooking big meals b/c you can use one side for dirty dishes and pots and the other side for preparing things like veggies, washing chicken, etc.

The only thing though, make sure if you get a sink like this to put the garbage disposal on the big side! We have it on the small side and it's silly b/c we almost always clean the dirty dishes on the big side. DH is going to change it over.

I appreciate all the inputs. We'll have to see what works for us, but this gives us some things to think about.

We don't hand-wash anything (unless a pot comes out of the dishwasher and couldn't get clean), and we definitely won't have a garbage disposal installed (causes too many problems with septic systems... )
Recycling goes immediately into recycling bins in the kitchen.

DW does use large pots, so I'm thinking either one large sink, or if it's just to fill up the pot, we can get a telescoping faucet and fill the pot on the counter.

Do you have cabinets already? If not - we got a SS farmhouse sink and I LOVE it. It's so big and it's def wide enough to designate areas for rinsing and piling.

I wanted to bump an older thread to get some more opinions.

I am amazed how many people above say they prefer a double basin sink so they could wash dishes. If you have a dishwasher, wouldn't you be using that to wash your dishes?

Also if you are planning to install a garbage disposal... would it be OK to use the large single basin sink and install the garbage disposal in the one basin? Any drawbacks?

I prefer one large basin. I have a dishwasher, so there's not a lot of dish washing/drying that is taking place in the sink.

I love having a sink large enough for most anything, and it was very useful for baths when my kids were infants.

i prefer one large basin - it is so much easier to soak big pans when necesary

the dishes just go in the dishwasher

had a split sink with disposable ont he small side and that was annying because i was alawyas emptying the large side drain into the small side

We are getting a double undermount one equal sizes..the reason why is I'm anal and I like keeping DD's cups etc separate from ours...we'll also have a garbage disposal in one
