To find out or not to??

So until recently my dh and I decided we didn't want to find out the sex of the baby. Of course we are both dying to know but we like the idea of being surprised etc. Now that its getting closer to my 20 week appt. he is starting to say maybe we should find out lets flip a coin etc etc. Meanwhile the only reason I've been ok with not finding out is b/c he was so ok with it so that made it a lot easier. Everyone in my family thinks I'm crazy not to find out. Anyway my question is for those of you that are not finding out the sex what is your reasoning? Is it just the extra surprise? I can't decide if its worth it but at the same time I'm afraid if I find out I will be upset afterwards that I didn't hold out!! Those of you who had kids already and didn't find out would you do that again??? Thanks sorry I'm so confused!!!

Re: To find out or not to??

I found out with my first 2. My reason with #1 was b/c i wanted to be "prepared" have all the right gender clothing, ect.
#2- i wanted to be a suprise but DH and DD wanted to know. The tech wrote it on a peice of paper, and i ended up cheating the next day.
#3- is our last. I really wanted to experience the "not knowing" feeling. Ill admit, its difficult at times- especially when trying to prepare, BUT, so far its worth it. Its been fun and kept the excitement and i cant wait for the moment in the deliver room when they say.. ITs A....- and all the calls we get to make after :)
Its a personal decision, everyone has different reasons. GL Chat Icon

Re: To find out or not to??

We were surprised for our first & I loved it. It was such a great moment to hear "It's a boy" in the delivery room.

This time we found out only because we needed to prepare if we were having a girl. We are buying a new home, and decided that if we were having a girl then of course separate brs and a playroom, but if we were having another boy, they could share a room and have a separate playroom.

Re: To find out or not to??

IJust a different perspective for you:

'm going to be honest, we found out b/c we are both totally practical, planner types ........We didn't care about the 'surprise' aspect of waiting until delivery -

And I am NOT the warm and fuzzy type at all - But when we were having the sono and they told us it was a boy it was still a feeling I can't describe - ESPECIALLY my DH, he was so overcome w/ emotion - He drove home in a daze - it took him a good hour or 2 to come out of his 'I'm ahving a son' coma -

I personally think it was kind of an 'extra' experience, rather than a 'ruined' surprise -

I found out and what I can't understand is how it is not "a surprise" if you find out at 20 weeks as opposed to 40. Yes it's less wait, but no less exciting to hear "it's a ...."

I plan to find out with #2.

I don't think I can wait that long to find out. I am having a hard time waiting for 20 weeks! Chat Icon

Re: To find out or not to??

thanks for the responses. I guess there is really no answer I know its a personal decision. I obviously don't think one way is better than the other which is why I'm having such a hard time deciding!! Just thought hearing other people's reasons might help me decide!

I always used to say I didn't want to find out. Then when I got pregnant, that changed, I really wanted to know. I decided that its a surprise whenever you find out. It does make it easier to plan and buy things!

Re: To find out or not to??

We are not finding out-- and I am personally DYING to know, but am looking forward to that moment when the kid gets here and we can announce it to everyone.

I will say that our Level II was anti-climactic because we were not finding out-- but who cares.

I do wish I could buy a few more things, and get a little more into nursery decorating-- but, I didn't really plan to do much before the baby was here anyway. But, this will give me some projects when I am home with the baby-- the kid won't know the room is not fully "done" anyway.

At this point, I don't have much time left-- patience has never been one of my strong suits, but I am sticking to my guns.

Re: To find out or not to??

We are not finding out.

I sooooooooooooo want to know. However DH really wanted it to be a surprise so I am doing it for him. It is torture though.

My reasoning for wanting to find out has less to do with the planning aspect, but more with the bonding aspect. I would like to be able to call the baby by name when I talk to him/her. I want to get to know him/her if that makes any sense.

Re: To find out or not to??

We aren't finding out and it's only for the added suprise. My family is rather annoyed that they can't buy girl or boy things, but it has been fun waiting.

I am really looking forward to that moment when we find out what we have Chat Icon

This is exactly how I feel. I don't care so much about the planning b/c I have no problem painting the room yellow and buying gender neutral clothes till its born. I just don't want to call it "it" till May!!! lol. I guess I still have a few weeks to decide!
