How far along are you?
I also had early bleeding. I know I didn't see a pole or heartbeat at my first appointment. I was measuring a few days behind.

according to my LMP i should be 6 weeks and 3 days

They did an u/s on me at 6 weeks 3 days and didn't see anything. At my 7 week u/s it was a completely different story and everything looked normal. Please try not to give up hope just yet! I'm praying for you...

First of all
I don't think you're having an ectopic, and this pregnancy could just be having normal spotting BUT, I would just want to be 100% sure for the sake of your health. I think the doctor's call re: the beta, was not sufficient- is there any way you can call back? They really didn't give you enough information. They should give you your hcG number and then test again in 48 hours and tell you that number too. When I had the ectopic they didn't test my beta until WAY too late and my numbers were already down as low as 470 and dropped to 370 48 hours later - I should have been well over 6 weeks by then and my numbers should have been WAY higher, and increasing, not dropping. When they first saw the 470 they thought it was a miscarriage because it was so low, and that I'd be back to zero soon. But when they did the 2nd test and saw how slow the numbers were dropping, that was the first time they mentioned "ectopic" even though they never saw any signs of my 6 week pregnancy in my uterus. I've heard plenty of people don't see anything early in their pregnancy and go on to have normal pregnancies, but it's good to err on the side of caution I think, given my experience.
Your symptoms right now do NOT mean anything is bad, it can just be a normal part of early pregnancy, BUT just on the slight chance it could be ectopic, you need to take care of yourself. As someone who had an ectopic I can tell you that my doctors repeatedly kept dismissing me and I really had to push to get anywhere. If they had caught it earlier I might still have my right tube, which I ended up having to have removed. (Even on the DAY I ENDED UP HAVING MY SURGERY the nurse thought it would "go away by itself" because she thought my tube wasn't ruptured/bleeding and they weren't too worried...but let me tell you, I forced my way to a doctor and finally forced them to do a more thorough ultrasound where they finally saw that my tube was ruptured and I had internal bleeding). If they had paid more attention earlier in my pregnancy when I first had symptoms, they may have caught it before the tube ruptured and I wouldn't have had to have it removed. Ectopics are pretty rare (I think around 2% of pregnancies), but I'd still want to be very thorough with my testing, just in case.

Try to remain positive.
I feel we have similar visits to the doctor. the diffference is that my office told me not to come back until week 8, when we would definitely be able to see a heartbeat. they didn't think anything of the fact that there was just a sac and no pole. they just told me that i probably ovulated late.
