Re: Question for ladies who have/had GD..

just got diagnosed with GD with my second pregnancy. I don't really remember my diet from the first time but I followed the guidelines from the dietician very closely. I ate whatever she told me to eat.

Thanks.. she didn't really tell me what to eat, just gave me a "budget" of carbs, fat, etc....

I actually had a very filling and satisfying lunch today (not much different than I usually eat), and my blood sugar was well under my cut-off number, so I was pleased with that.

Re: Question for ladies who have/had GD..

I don't have GD, but at my last appointment, my doctor basically put me on a high protein, low carb diet. I'm not sure if this is consistent with the GD diet, but some of the things she recommended were eating a handful of nuts as a snack (I buy the unsalted ones), putting nuts or extra protein on a salad for lunch, having grainy bread with peanut butter or eggs for breakfast, etc. The bread I bought was Arnold's whole wheat, double fiber, which I think had fewer carbs than the multigrain bread I had been eating. For snacks, I also sometimes have cottage cheese or vegetables with hummus.

Re: Question for ladies who have/had GD..

Honestly it was a guessing game to see what affected my sugar.

For breakfast I usually had 1/2 a bagel with peanut butter. It seems that if I put peanut butter on it then my sugar was fine. I was so sick of peanut butter by the end of my pregnancy.

Lunch...tuna fish, cold cuts....crackers with peanut butter or cheese. Alll stuff I probably shouldn't have eaten but worked fine with the GD.

Dinner was usually protein and veggies. Very rarely could I have pasta which was hard.

You have to see what works with your body. I was able to control it with diet and once in a while it went over the limit but my doctor never worried.

My DD was born at exactly 40 weeks and weighted 8.7lbs.

I follow the amount of servings I'm supposed to have everyday, but here is a sample of what I eat:

Snack - 1 slice of whole wheat (WW )toast with butter or cheese. Or 6 WW crackers w/ cheese.

Breakfast - 1 WW eng muffin with cheese or egg withYogurt or glass of milk.

Lunch - Salad with grilled chix, crackers. Or sandwich on whole grain bread with side salad. Piece of fruit.

Snack - fruit with cheese and WW crackers.

Dinner - chicken with veggies, sometimes over brown rice.

Snack - pretzel nuggets with peanut butter, or 1/2 bag of microwave popcorn. or sugar free jello is free.

If you want FM me. I have been keeping an excel spreadsheet of all my meals and snacks w/ my scores. I'll email it you if you want real specific ideas.

Breakfast 3/4 cup of Cheerios and 1 cup Milk and 1 oz string cheese. ( I am not a breakfast person....so I have mainly been eating cereal) Variation-Hard Boiled Eggs with English Muffin (whole Wheat)

Snack-Apple, Orange or Apple Sauce.

Lunch- Tomotoe Soup with Croutons and 1/2 Salad with Grilled Chicken (from Panera Bread)

Snack- Apple, hummus, orange, popcorn or apple sauce

Dinner- Grilled Chicken, New Potatoes and Spinach

Snack- 1/2 a cup of Ice Cream (cookies n cream) yes, regular sugar.

Be sure to snack before going to bed b/c I was told that if not, your levels could spike in the morning. Also, when taking your blood sugar, be sure to do it before eating your snack.

I have been eating what I normally eat but I am watching my carbs more closely and snacking (which I never did before.) Good Luck!

Re: Question for ladies who have/had GD..

I was on a 2200 cal/day diet. I don't remember what the break down of carbs/fat/protein was but this was a typical day.

Bkfast: 1/2 whole wheat english muffin, 1 egg, 1/2 slice of cheese and slice of bacon (Bkfast numbers were my worst so it took forever to figure it out--I absolutely could not have any amoutn of milk in the morning)

Snack Fruit

LUnch: Whole wheat weight watchers bread, with turkey, lettuce, cheese, and mayo baby carrots

Snack: Fruit

Snack: PB and crackers OR Pollyo and yogurt

Dinner: Chicken burger on Whole wheat Eng Muff, slice cheese, veggie

Snack: 100cal pack and 1/2cup of milk OR no sugar added icecream blended with natural PB (YUM!)

My sugar was really well controlled. I followed the meal plan to a tee in the beginning and worked with my nutiritionist to figure out what worked for me and what didnt (e.g., I could not eat clementines, any white flour, or milk in the AM--not even in coffee). ONce it was good, I could be more flexible and add extra protein or try new treats (I even had cheesecake!), but it really helped to stick to it to get to that point.

Good LUck!!!

Re: Question for ladies who have/had GD..

Thanks everyone!!!!

sjm - I think breakfast will be my greatest challenge.

I've done pretty well today. Breakfast was my worst, but my blood sugars after lunch and dinner were really good.

I'm sure as I get into this more, it will be easier!

Re: Question for ladies who have/had GD..

they say th first thing in the morning, is the hardest part to keep sugar under control. it does get easier later in the day.

i found breakfast, did not need to be breakfast food. i typically had a sandwhich. usually wonder whole grain white (its actually got more protein and fiber than most regular whole wheat breads) and roast beef or turkey or whatever deli meat i was in the mood for with some cheese on it. doesn't sounds like breakfast food, but it kept my sugar under control in the morning. and i wasn't starving for food 2 hours later.

alot of it is also trial and error. i found i could eat potatoes (french fries) without much problem, but couldn't look at pasta or plain bread at all.

yet i could still eat a dish of ice cream every single night. (although i did usually put nuts on it jsut to add some extra protein)

and a big thing, don't get nuts if you go over once in a while. just keep track of what food works and what doesn't so you know what you need to adjust with.

(I had GD both pregnancies... first one starting at 28 weeks, and second one i was on a diabetic diet for 7 straight months.... you get used to the changes)

question for you ladies from someone taking their 3 hr gtt tomorrow.....from reading your responses it seems like most of you say that sugar spikes in the morning. So why then did my dr. suggest that I take my 1 hr (which I failed) and now my 3 hr first thing in the morning after fasting for 10-12 hours? Isn't that setting you up to fail kind of???Chat Icon

That's a good question...I don't really know the answer to that.

I know my fasting number at my 3 hour was okay. I literally just missed the cut-off for the 1st hour (180 is the cutoff, mine was 184). It was my 2nd hour that did me in...I think they said the cutoff was 150, and I was 184. My 3rd hour was good though. If you fail 2 out of the 4 blood draws, even by a point or two, they will diagnose you with GD.

Re: Question for ladies who have/had GD..

i think they want the 3 hour in the morning, just so you have a good fasting time to start with. instead of not eating all day, and doing it later on. but don't hold me to that.
