I spent two days in L&D
I had to get 4 blood transfusions this past weekend. My hematacrit levels ( iron, vitamin b and folic acid) were so low that my doctor did not know how I was not fainting and able to do anything. I had blood work done on Thursday and on Friday the doctor called and told me to go to the hospital immediately. They put me on a fetal monitor as soon as i got there and was doing really well and i was having irregular contractions. I had to wait for my OB and a hematologist to come to see what they wanted to do with me. They decided I needed a blood transfusion and they were going to admit me. They transferred me over to the high risk part of the L&D floor and they started the transfusion right away. I never really knew how they gave you a transfusion. It wasn't that bad. They give you tylenol and some benedryl to counteract any possible side effects . They hook the donor blood up to the IV and it mixes with the saline solution. They watch you very close for the first 15 minutes and then you are monitored continuously. They also started me on iron pills as well. I received another transfusion later that night and they were going to wait until morning to see if my numbers rose enough to be released. At 5 am they took my blood and found that they did not rise as much as they wanted. Another OB from my office came in and said that when you are pg it is very hard for the levels to rise because of the amount of blood volume a pregnant woman has. So she said hopefully another bag or 2 would bring me to a sustainable number. She also told me that having a number as low as I had was very dangerous for the surgery and there are risks because if I do not boost my number up enough there will be no stores when I loose blood during the section. I finished my 4th transfusion around 3 pm yesterday and at 630 they finally told me my numbers went up enough that I could go home. So now it is a lot of iron pills ( which is killing my stomach) the other vitamins and follow ups with the drs in the next 10 days, in hopes that the transfusion boosted me enough and with the help of the iron I can keep the levels up and have an easy delivery. So if you could throw a few prayers my way I would love you! I am just so terrified soemthing is going to happen to me during the surgery, but at least I will be closely watched and monitored.
