Does anyone else get this?

Every so often, I wake up in the middle of the night with horrible pain in my calf muscles, like the muscles are too tight and need to be stretched out. Last night, it was both legs and I woke up screaming so loud my DH was sure that the police would come. He thinks something terrible is wrong with me, but I am sure it is pregnancy related. Anyone else get this?

Charlie horse. Eat bananas for the potassium. I heard flexing your feet back will get rid of it or standing straight up as you feel it.

bananas and when the pain is there - get up, walk to the kitchen or the bathroom, get your foot on a COLD floor.

The cold shocks the muscle and the pain will go away almost immediately.

It's totally normal, stretching my calf down through my heal (so toes go up)works best for me

Yep, and when I can't because I'm in too much pain, I have FH pull my foot towards my leg, forcing the flex. It usually happens when I stretch and point my toes half asleep.

They are totally normal. I got them a lot in my third trimester and a few times early on in my pregnancy. The key is to catch them before your leg seizes up and stretch out your calf. Feel better.Chat Icon

Oh yeah!! those suckers hurt. just like PPs said.. eat bannanas, drink OJ and lots of water.. these have helped me. Also you will be sore a few days after having.. takes a few days for the muscles to calm down.

Re: Does anyone else get this?

Yes, I get it a lot. I try to eat a banana everyday, but it doesn't seem to help. It is just awful!! I'm usually yelling and cursing when it happens.

Yep... it's a build up of lactic acid in your muscles. make sure you're getting potassium and i agree with the flexing your feet as it's happening. i am surprised you're getting them a lot being pregnant. i used to get them when i was on sports teams in HS and college... when my muscles were overworked.

Re: Does anyone else get this?

this is def. pregnancy related, I had it once and my leg was sore for days!!!
ETA I always made sure to have a big glass of water at night, and I think that helped me to not have that happen again

Re: Does anyone else get this?

It's normal. When you stretch, make sure your toes are pointed up, not down. Since I started doing that, I haven't had a charley horse.
