I need some advice on our name choice
Sorry, I'm a little bit of a tease, because we're not sharing the name until the baby is born... sorry!
But I'm hoping you can still help me. The name we chose is a semi-popular name, and there are a few different spellings out there. We've decided to choose a longer, more formal spelling of the name. But DH wants her "nickname" to be that same name, but with a shorter, more conventional spelling.
I think it's a little weird. He thinks it's only fair for when she's in Kindergarten/1st grade and trying to learn how to write her name.
Sorry if this is a little vague, but...any thoughts on this?

Re: I need some advice on our name choice
this is going to sound CRAZY....but Dave's nephew...his name is AJ and for a LOT of his childhood - he couldn't find personalized stuff in the stores and it upset him...
he'd run over that license plate frame thing in the toys r us and never find his name, try and find a magnet with his name, with no luck...and his name was pretty basic...but i just know it did upset him - so we were always buying him pre-purchased name stuff...
just a thought....

Re: I need some advice on our name choice
Both very good points...I remember how thrilled I used to be to find pencils, cups, etc. with my name on it. And they DO tend to stock those things with one of the shorter spellings of the name--but I'm just really not a big fan of the way it looks on paper.
And Jenn...I have no idea what the heck you're talking about. Seriously though...I threw out the idea of shortening the name as a nickname and DH gave me one of these faces in return: Ok then!

Let me see if I can clarify:
The name we've chosen is a 2-syllable name with 3-4 commonly seen spellings. We like one of the longer, less conventional spellings.
Instead of shortening that name for a nickname, DH wants to keep the SOUND of the name the same, but use the shorter, more common spelling.
Does that help at all?

Nope, it's not that one. We "tried it on" one day and it just felt weird. I'm pretty sure I told you this one, as well.

Ok, after reading it a couple of times, I'm pretty sure I know what you mean now.
I think it's confusing though that he wants the nickname to be the same as her birth name, just with a different spelling. I've never heard of anyone doing that. I almost feel as though you have to choose one name or the other and just stick with it. lol...I'm sorry if THAT sounds confusing.

Re: I need some advice on our name choice
I understand what you're saying and I personally think it's pointless and ultimately more confusing not only for the kid, but everyone else -
It's one thing to be named Jennifer, and teach your DD to spell Jen before Jennifer .........Or her name is Victoria, and you call her Tori, so she learns to spell Tori before the full Victoria ...
But what you'll be doing is basically teaching her the 'wrong' spelling of her name. -
My name is Marisa, not MarisSa.........KWIM?

I am going to agree and say that if you are going to use a different spelling of a name as a nickname, then it's not really a nickname at all. I think this will just confuse your child for a while and she may not know how to really spell her name.

Re: I need some advice on our name choice
I don't think theres really anything wrong with doing that....Like with the name Nicole- the nick-name is Nikki ???? Spelled differently, but sounds the same in the root ......Am I on the right track ? If so, why not, its your DD !

Re: I need some advice on our name choice
Yeah I don't really think it counts as a nickname if you are just changing the spelling. I think that will be confusing for the child, relatives, and teachers. The teacher will have the proper name and think the child is just spelling her name wrong. I would go with the spelling that you like and just leave it at that.

so the name will always sound the same nickname or not its just a matter of spelling it differently sometimes?

Re: I need some advice on our name choice
I think I know what you mean. For example my name is Deborah....but I can tell you I get really annoyed when people want to spell it Debra (although as a child it would've been easier/shorter to learn.) I shortened it to Debbie anyway but is it like this? I think it may actually be more confusing to a child later on. JMO
eta: I have nothing against "Debra".....I would just get annoyed because it was "wrong" kwim. Don't want to offend anyone out there.

I agree-- it's one thing if like DH, your name is Matthew and everyone calls you Matt.. but to figure out the shortening of a name based on a longer one is a little silly IMO.
Also, and I am not really sure what the question is in terms of spelling... but I will also add that I could NEVER find my name on any of that stuff-- pencils, hello kitty stuff-- whatever it was. I always hated that. My name was very popular in the 70's when I was born-- but rarely do you find stuff spelled in the more feminine "with an i"

Re: I need some advice on our name choice
Thanks so much for all the input!!
Sorry I was MIA (our internet was down), but you guys figured out exactly what I was talking about so it all worked out. I agree that it's a little weird to have a different spelling of the same name as a nickname. I showed DH all of your responses, so I think we have a lot to discuss.
And yes Nicole, I will tell you on Sunday so long as you agree to keep it top secret!
