Re: Can we have California Rolls

I would ask your practitioner what they think.

I still eat Sushi...... I always get it from the same place I've been goig to for years and my midwife says its fine and to enjoy every minute of it. WOmen in Japan don't stop eating sushi when they are pregnant. BUT this is JMO

Most women stay away from it.....

there is no master list of foods to eat or not eat.... so best advice is always sheck with your practitioner.

Re: Can we have California Rolls

Absolutely. Everything in those rolls are cooked.

My Ob is very lenient anyway and says that I can have real sushi. He told me this whole story about when he was doing his residency and his wife was pregnant. A little bit of a gross story....but basically she had eaten fish and after taking a bite & swallowing it, they noticed that something was in the fish. He rushed her to the hospital in a panic about a worm being in the fish (this was many years ago). He was laughed out of the hospital. The doctors were adiment that even if she has eaten a parasite that those are "fish" parasites that can only live on fish. He says that any fish parasite cannot survive a humans' stomach acids. Gross but after he told me I was like okay----I can still have my sushi.

Long story short, I will have a tuna roll every once in a while and I don't worry. I go to a very reputable sushi restaurant & I know the owner.

Re: Can we have California Rolls

Most California rolls have fake crab and not raw fish in them. I ate both California Rolls and Boston Rolls (with shrimp in them) when I was PG.

Re: Can we have California Rolls

Yes. I'd just make sure that it was prepared separately from the raw stuff.

Re: Can we have California Rolls

Both california rolls and shrimp tempura rolls don't have raw fish so I think you are fine. I've had both since becoming pregnant.

Re: Can we have California Rolls

I think cooked sushi is probably okay- things like tempora shrimp, california rolls, vegetable rolls -but depending on your comfort level you might worry about if it was prepared on a board with raw sushi. So you might want to ask them to prepare it on a clean board to avoid contamination.

I love sushi so don't get me wrong - I ate it frequently before I had DD (not as much after just b.c DH doesn't like it and I used to go with coworkers.)

But I was a little turned off today when I saw a few minutes of that show The Doctors this morning and they were talking about sushi and parasites in your intestines. My only issue is that even the best restaurants have slip ups and you just never know...

Here is an excerpt they have on their page:
Is sushi safe?
How safe is the sushi you eat? A common concern with any fish is that it may contain mercury, a known neurotoxin, which harms neural (brain) tissue. Dr. Lisa warns that pregnant women should be especially careful of contaminated fish because it puts the brain and nervous system development of the fetus at risk. Gastroenterologist Dr. Jeffrey Sherman from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center dishes on whether sushi makes for a healthy meal or a raw deal.

A raw deal
Dr. Sherman explains that raw fish often contain parasites that will burrow into the small bowel and cause severe abdominal pain, cramping, nausea and vomiting. Although the reaction is not life-threatening and will only last two to four days, some patients will experience months of irritable bowels as a result of the experience.

Parasites are killed when fish is stored at 10 degrees Fahrenheit for five days, but not all restaurants adhere to those regulations. Is it worth the risk? Dr. Travis chides, “I’ve eaten sushi, my friends have eaten sushi … I don’t really have to worry about it, do I?”

Dr. Sherman counters, “Well, you’re gambling with your own body. I personally don’t eat sushi, knowing what I’ve seen in my patients!”

Re: Can we have California Rolls

Yes, my OB gave me the OK for all the cooked sushi. I would of gone mental if I can't have any sushi at all.

Once in a blue moon, I have a piece or two raw ones (I am a bad bad pregnant lady who should be ashamed of herself, but I don't! Chat Icon )

Re: Can we have California Rolls

I ADORE SUSHI!!!!!!

But I stayed away from anything raw while I was pregnant....

Yes, you may go to the same place that you've gone to for YEARSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, but what happens, on that one occasion that bad fish is brought in?

I decided not to take that chance, but still enjoyed california rolls and any of the cooked rolls.

I was wondering that also- but then I wonder if its still dangerous because they may still be using the same knife , and bamboo board ( whatever that thing is they roll it with) as they do with the raw stuff....Chat Icon I'm a big sushi person and miss it dearly Chat Icon

Re: Can we have California Rolls

I have had them maybe two times, and I get them from the same place. They are fine!! The only problem is some places make the sushi all in the one area, so it could mix with raw fish.
