Re: Is it bad to...
Why would it be bad???
Some employers may require you to be there X amount of time in order for you to have a paid maternity leave.
Some employers dont pay you at all- so it doesnt matter.
(for instance- my employer pays my salary for the first month, but its required that Ive been employeed for over 18 months)

I think if you take a new job while you are pregnant you may not be entitled to disability or FMLA. But I'd double check.

I agree - I'm not sure how FMLA works. But I'm pretty sure w/ MOST companies you have to be there a certain amount of time for health and then maternity benefits -

Re: Is it bad to...
Just be aware that you won't be protected by FMLA. That means that you're not entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave. FMLA protects your job for those 12 weeks.
That doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose your job after you give birth. You're just not protected by FMLA. Your employer may have more generous maternity leave benefits and protection so the fact that you're not covered under FMLA may not matter.

My job now is not covered under FMLA either, it's a privately owned restaurant. I am the Front of House manager. So I'd be s.o.l anyways.

I don't know I feel like by not telling them I am lying and they could find someone who can work for longer than 9 mnths.

You know, I haven't decided what I'm going to do on that front. I don't know what the 'right' thing to do would be...

Plus- since you dont live in NY the rules may be different anyway.
I would be sure to look into that.
And I would not tell my new (or current) employeer until 12 weeks- either way!

FMLA is a federal law. It applies no matter what state you live in. Some states have enacted more generous maternity leave laws, but most, if not all, require you to be working there for at least 12 months. You should see if your state has its own FMLA laws.

Nope, I got my job while I was a couple of weeks pregnant. Of course I didn't say anything, but that's your choice.

I knew I was PG too, but really I did not see the need to tell them until I was 11w. I told my boss earlier b/c we are friends, but we told the rest of the important folks (our VP and HR) at 11w or so (I was starting to show).
I would not tell anyone anything at an interview. Although it is nice of you to think of them really it is so early it is *possible* for you to not know yet...KWIM?

Personally I think 4 weeks is a little too early to start telling anyone
