Re: Eye color

DH and I both have blue eyes, so we can only have blue eyed babies....and according to this calculator, yes, we have a 100% chance of having a blue eyed little oneChat Icon

Said only 6.1 chance of blue and my DS is as blue as you can get at 3 years old !

That's not wrong - it said you had a 6.1% chance, not no chance :)

The degree of blue really doesn't have anything to do with how much blue gene you have. If you have blue eyes than you have two recessive genes for blue. Both of my parents have brown eyes and I have blue, Brown is a dominant gene and blue is recessive, so they both carry the recessive gene for my blue eyes, but for then the brown gene masks the blue gene.

Chat Icon No, actually...I guessed my mom's eye color (she died when i was 13). i know it wasn't brown...and i think i tried green, but based upon mine and my brother's eye colors she couldn't have had anything other than blue. Process of elimination!
(unless one of us are actually adopted....) Chat Icon

Re: Eye color

It's very cute, but there are a couple of problems with the test (of course Chat Icon). Bear with me...I took 2 detailed genetics courses in college--they weren't required but I was SO interested in this kind of stuff.

Take, for example, the case of my DH and I. I have green eyes--my mom has blue, and my Dad has brown. My DH has brown eyes, and so do both of his parents. In a case like DH's, we would actually need to look at both of HIS parents' parents. Since brown is the genetically dominant eye color, anyone with brown eyes can either be carrying ONLY the genes for brown eyes, or they can be carrying the recessive allele for blue/green/hazel eyes.

DH's genetic makeup is a mystery, because his father's two brothers have blue eyes. So, he MAY be carrying the allele for blue eyes, or he may not.

Sorry if that was confusing, but it's all really interesting to learn about. Chat Icon

Isn't that so cool? I love that!

I tease DH that he's ruining my plans for having green-eyed babies Chat Icon He knows I'm just kidding though. Chat Icon

I don't understand why that's wrong. They didn't say it was impossible or not going to happen just that there was a small chance Chat Icon

100% blue, except I don't know if I did it right Dh has true blue eyes. Mine are blue too, but not as light...more deep with a little green. I don't know how to work that thing on the right.
