If I quit my job...
If I quit my job, can I go on my fiances insurance as his spouse? Or do we have to married?
I hate my job, Im a general manager of a restaurant, I do everything, I bartend, serve, manage, host, food run. It is very stressful and I come home crying all the time.

I think you have to be married unless his job offers domestic partner benefits.

Re: If I quit my job...
some companies have companion insurance that you have to be living together for a certain amount of time- and have it documented. Otherwise, if your checking the married box, then you have to be married- i guess?

Can you look into Medicaid or Family Health Plus? I think there is such a thing as emergency Medicaid for pregnant women!

Re: If I quit my job...
If you are not married, then you can't be on his insurance as his wife. Some insurance companies may have somekind of domestic parttnership thing, but you'd have to check with them. I would say chances are this will not be the case. Are you and your FH planning a big wedding? If you are truly miserable at your job and do not want/need another one you might want to consider getting married in a civil ceremony and then doing your big wedding however you planned.

When my Dh was hired by the FDNY and we did his medical benefits, we had to provide a marriage certificate.
When he worked for TD Waterhouse, I was able to get his dental benefits under a domestic partnership clause, he worked in NJ (we lived in NY) and we had to provide a lease with both of our names as well as utility bill in both our names.

Does the domestic partnership depend on the company he works for, or his insurance company?

At the time, and this was four years ago, I think it was b/c his company was based in NJ and NJ honored domestic partnerships and NY didn't. BUT that could have changed.
Also, I agree with doing a civil ceremony now, we almost did that as well at one point!
Does the domestic partnership depend on the company he works for, or his insurance company?

I am on my SO's insurance as a domestic partnership but it depends on the insurance his company offers. They don't all offer this.

I think you have to be married unless his job offers domestic partner benefits. Yep. Have your SO check with his HR/benefits person to see what they offer. Also, quitting your job *may* not make you eligible for anything until open enrollment. If your Dr puts you on medical leave that is different.

Re: If I quit my job...
I would check also when DH's open enrollment period is. I couldn't be placed on his insurance right away after we got married. I had to wait until Jan. 1st. But I had my own insurance so I really didn't look into it closely.
Plus they may see your pregnacy as a pre-existing condition and not cover you right away either.

Re: If I quit my job...
In NYS if your employer offers family benefits they have to offer domestic partnership benefits. I had my Husband on my insurance before we were married. I had to provide a bunch of documenttation that we were financially dependent (both names on lease, bills to the same address, joint checkng account etc)
His portion of the health insurance was taken out of my check post tax so it was a bit higher but worth it because I had a better health insurance policy.
I would contact your benefits or human resources department for more information.
ETA: I was told this information by the head of the benefits division for NYS benefits in ALbany. THey say a lot of employers try to get around it and say they don't offer it but it is state mandated.

Re: If I quit my job...
It totally depends on his company. We only allow same sex domestic partners but some companies allow all domestic partners.

I don't believe this is correct. I work for a large law firm and have a sister who is a civil rights attorney and neither of us are aware of this.

Plus they may see your pregnacy as a pre-existing condition and not cover you right away either. They cannot do this. Pregnancy should not fall victim to a Pre-existing clause, as long as there is no interruption in coverage.

Hmm interesting....THis is what I was told by someone high up in ALbany. I did have to FIGHT A LOT to get him to be covered and do all the leg work myself but it did all go through. It took a few months to get it done.

Re: If I quit my job...
I'm pretty sure you have to be married. You can just go to town hall and get married on paper before your wedding. I have several friends who have gotten married on paper first.
DH added me to his insurance even though I have my own. They wanted a copy of our marriage license.

Re: If I quit my job...
fyi on domestic partnership... it's not always easy to prove.... we lived together for years and were engaged, and I was rejected becuase we didn't share a checking account or mortgage
so, if his policy does recognize domestic partnerships, look into what defines a domestic partnership before making your decision

SO...he talked to his job, we have to be married. I just filly silly getting married that way. We don't have a date planned yet for a wedding, but I just don't want it to be impersonal. But I do have to do what's best for my angel growing inside of me. Its all about him/her now.

not all companies require you 'prove it'. My company simply asked me to sign a piece of paper that dave & i were in a relationship, that we were not related and that the relationship was longer than 6 months old. No proof required.

One of my best friends married a Canadian guy. They were married on paper at town hall for 1.5 years before their actual wedding. The reason for this was that her fiance had gotten a new job that required a ton of paperwork. It's not like he needed to marry her for the job but he would have had to sign over a lot of rights to the company who was sponsoring him.
Their wedding was everything any normal wedding would be with all the emotions and crying. They were just married on paper first. I don't think it's a big deal at all.
