I've never had surgery but I guess I am thinking I could just wake up and have a baby in my arms instead of going through hours of labor.

You are awake for a c-section unless there is a serious complication. So there is no just waking up and having a baby. You actually hear what is going on, what the Drs are saying and doing, and you can feel them sometimes. Not trying to scare you, but I just want you to know the factsChat Icon

I was just going to say this.

Also, not all women tear when delivering vaginally.

Being scared of labor and delivery is a natural thing, but your body knows what to do.

I think you need to do some GOOD reading on both vaginal and c-sections. The pros and cons of each as well as the risks associated with each . There is a really good book that breaks down all medicalvprocedures that occur during a vaginal and c-section delivery into a pros and cons list.

THinking Womans guide to a better birth

NOT all women tear. My sister had a wonderful vaginal delivery using an epidural. The OB was wonderful in making sure she did NOT tear and did not need an episiotomy. She was up and standing 15 minutes after the birth.

I am delivering using a midwife group who in 20 years have only done an episiotomy once.

See if you can rent some DVDs on childbirth and start to read more about it. Read about positive vaginal birth stores. MOthering dot com has tons of wonderful and positive birth stories that should help to ease your fears.

SOmetimes c-sections are necessary and that's ok, but there are A LOT of risks that come along with major surgery.

I think a lot of fear from women comes from a lack of knowledge or infomation on the area that is making them nervous or scared. If you know what to expect and what happens a lot of times it helps to alleviate those fears.

I'm having a vaginal delivery at home. Am I scared, no, nervous YES1! I've never expereinced labor or delivery, there is an aprehension because it is somethign I have never experienced before. But I know that my body is well prepared to do this just like I can walk and talk I just have to trust in it and my health care providers.

If you think about it, vaginal tearing and having your abdomen cut open are both painful. I don't really understand why the tearing is so much more scary than the incision of a c-section. I do understand the allure of a c-section though. It seems much more controlled. Maybe that's what your afraid about?

I ended up with a csection after being in labor for about 24 hours. I will be having a csection again with this one since I was told I wouldn't be a good candidate for VBAC after DD's issues. The section wasn't bad but it is major surgery and I think the recovery can be rough have to deal with surgery and a newborn. Having said that - I didn't have any issues with my section - the good thing is that (barring any surprises) you know when your bean is arriving. I don't think I would have chosen to have the section without a medical necessity.

recent mom here.

a section is definitely NOT the easy way out, and a vaginal delivery is not as terrifying as you may think.... I think you may be scared of a vag birth becuase of the unknown facets of the process... I recommend you get laugh and learn about childbirth.

After an unusually long and strenuous labor, I can tell you it really isn't THAT bad. it is rather painful if you opt out from getting an epidural.... as I did for the first 26 hours (my labor was prolonged and stalled on its own... this is not the norm to last that long!). However, when they gave me pictocin (which increases contraction strength), I asked for an epidural, and all was better... I even managed to sleep.

With an epi, the pushing part wasn't painful at all.... neither was the tearing. Pushing was only strenuous like a long workout Chat Icon.

after a vag delivery, you only feel like you've been punched in your nether region. as long as you sit on a fluffy chair, you feel fine! (oh, you're ab muscles are a bit stretched out, so they're a little weak the first few days...but no pain). Going to the bathroom is a bit painful initially, but that subsides rather quickly. you can walk around just fine, and can take care of the baby well.

I haven't had a section, but it is major surgery. after abdominal surgery, your intestines freeze-up and you can't eat initially. you also can't get out of bed or a chair easily. there are also a lot more potential complications..... recovery takes much longer with a section, and I imagine the pain level afterwards must also be much worse....

sure the delivery portion is likely easier with a planned section, but I would never want to trade with a section mom the day after... try to not be afraid of either process.... learn about each and it likely will ease your fears.....

oh, and if you intend to BF, it's best to get the baby to latch immediately after birth.... within an hour or so... which is sometimes not possible after a section, becuase you're still getting stiched up and recovering... so a section is more likely to create problems BF'ing down the road, beucase it's harder to get a baby to learn to latch later on....

Re: Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?

I'd take a vaginal birth over a c-section ANY DAY. I didn't have the choice, as I never dilated past four centimeters after 28 hours of labor. I was way more scared when they wheeled me into the OR for my c-section than I was at any point during my labor. And the recovery is not fun at all.

Re: Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?

I felt the same way you did. I had a choice to go natural or c-section with issues that would qualified me for it.

The FEAR of giving birth was really bad. I just could not imagine giving birth. Then I had other issues which would have made me really incapacitated for a while if I had chosen a vaginal delivery. So my mind was set on a c-section.

BUT.... this is no easy picnic. I will be honest. While I still cannot conceive giving birth for DS, I had a really bad recovery. I was 7 hours in recovery puking all I had in my body.

I cannot take pain killers because I have no tolerance for them. So I can tell you than trying to BF a baby and try to raise yourself in bed.... not pleasurable!

For about 2 weeks I thought I was ripping things inside when I tried to prop myself to BF DS every 2.5 hours.

Luckily DH was with me for 2 weeks. I don't know what I would have done without him.

So...yes, I got my c-section. But it might not be as "easy" as you think it is.

I am TTC for #2. My OB "thinks" I am going for another c-section due to the "official" reason I had the c-section. Now I am questioning if I was to really do another c-section. DH thinks I should. I am entertaining a VBAC. Although at this point, because of other issue they discovered when I had the c-section, I may not even be eligible for one.

Yes. I had the option of a VBAC but after some research I've decided to have a second c-section. I do not want to risk the possible complications of a VBAC. The risks are low, but two women recently told me their VBAC horror stories (why do people do that??!!) and now I'm all for the 2nd C. I had a very good c-section experience the first time & I hope it goes as smoothly with this baby.

ETA: I tried very hard to avoid the section the first time around because I wanted a vaginal birth. Baby wasn't cooperating though.

I read the Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth & hated it. I think it is terribly biased and not an accurate depiction of MOST c-section experiences, certainly not mine. I think that all pregnant should received unbiased info on both types of births since many vaginal births turn into emergency sections.

I'm surprised you hated the book so much. I have first hand c-section expereince on the medical side. I have worked in the OR during c-sections and treated the moms pre and post recovery and have seen every step of the way what happens. Like any book you need to take the information with a grain of salt because it will give you both extremes of the specturm. I think the book gives A LOT more information than the commonly read "what to expect when you are expecting" and similar pregnancy books.

When doing any research you should get your information from multiple sources and multiple points of view and not go by just one or two pieces of literature. This is the best way to get a "well rounded" view.

Re: Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?

Definately not. My c-section was an awful experience. I was very traumatized by the birth experience I had with my daughter, and it's very sad to me that I cannot look back at the day happily. Honestly, my epi didn't take so well & my c-section actually hurt. The recovery was hell. Labor? Not so bad honestly. I was in labor around 21 hours prior to the section & I would've gladly gone 21 more if it would've given me a vaginal birth. I am seeing a midwife now & planning a VBAC. I'm nervous, but not at all scared.

I second Blissful's recommendation for Henci Goer's book. I actually bought it yesterday & it's a great read. Have you thought of taking childbirth classes or hiring a doula? Maybe being prepared by classes will help ease your fears. A doula is also a great option becasue she willl be with you throughout labor & birth to provide support & relax you.

I hope to avoid a c-section. It's major surgery and the recovery can be really awful. Some people have a great experience with c-sections, but the recovery from a c-section tends to be more difficult and painful than from a vaginal delivery.

As someone who had a C-section (it was medically necessary) I wouldn't recommend having one just because you're scared. The surgery is not fun and the recovery s**ks!! You're in terrible pain, you can't sit up, getting up at all is excruciating, walking is so hard........every day it gets better but it takes a while and it's not fun. It took a month before I was really back to my old self but even so, those first 2 weeks were very hard and it was very hard to care for the baby when you're in so much pain and discomfort. Thank god my DH took 2 weeks off to be with me and the baby. I would have much preferred to go natural and deliver vaginally but I couldn't. Everyone is afraid to give birth but everyone survives it too and in the end you have a beautiful baby. Although it sounds easy a C-section is major abdominal surgery........although they are common it doesn't make the surgery any less of a major toll on your body. Just something to think about.

Ditto what she said. Chat Icon I was awake, I felt NO pain but you do feel all the tugging and pulling which is kinda gross. I heard everything, the doctors and my DH were talking to me throughout. I heard her being born, I saw her right after she came out, and she was right to my left while they stitched me back up. I was aware and awake for the whole surgery.

HOWEVER, after surgery they gave me so much morphine for the pain that once I was wheeled into the recovery room I didn't see her again until about 7pm that night. (I had her at 5:42am) I was SO sick from the morphine and SO out of it I couldn't even think about holding her or being with her and that really s**ked. I missed being with her those first few hours but I didn't have much of a choice. Just something else to take note of, all the girls on the ward with me who delivered vaginally were up and moving around pretty much right away and they were with their babies right away and the rest of us who had a C-section were in a lot of pain, felt like garbage, and took a while to recover enough to be with our babies. Again, it's major surgery.

Re: Anyone planning to get a c-section when it's not medically necessary?

I understand your fear of birth - I was petrified.

I ended up having a c-section after being induced. Let me tell you - a csection is MAJOR surgery and the recovery is not easy at all. It took a LONG time to heal. Most people that I know who had vaginal births were up and around a few hours later - I couldn't get out of bed for almost 24 hours after giving birth. I was on percoset and motrin for about week after -- and then motrin alone - for about a month after birth.

Also, most doctors will not let you just do a c-section. I was 12 days late and my dr. still started me on Cervadil.

Trust me - you really want to try and go vaginally if you can.

Like the others said - you are completely awake and aware of what they are doing to you (unless it's an emergency c-section) -- the whole thing is completly surreal IMO.

Im going in for my 3rd c-section in 2 weeks and I have to say it still scares me it is major surgery and anything can go wrong.. I always tense up before I go in and hope that it all goes well.. If I could have I would have had vaginal births for all of them but i wasnt an option..I dont think its smart to have major surgery when you dont need it.I say take the meds and have a vaginal birth and enjoy the experience..Also I would listen to your husband hes telling you to go naturally because he knows the risks..

Not all women tear you may not. I got an episiotomy (sp?) and while recovery is no cake walk I felt better by a week after I gave birth and by two weeks even better but not 100%. They gave me Dermoplast (numbing spray) and Tucks pads and Motrin and it worked wonders. Looking back I'm very happy I had a vaginal birth.

Having had both a c/s (for my first) and a vaginal delivery (VBAC for my 2nd), I can 1000% say that a vaginal birth is a million times easier.... when I got PG with #2, I definitley planned vbac from the start, not being totally opposed to a repeat c/s if my OB thought it was necessary. Luckily, everything worked out well and I dont regret the vbac at all - it was the best thing I ever did Chat Icon

Whenever I think about labor and delivery, I start getting really stressed out and scared. I've never had surgery but I guess I am thinking I could just wake up and have a baby in my arms instead of going through hours of labor.

DH is a surgeon and is dead set against me getting an unnecessary c-section. He thinks the risks are higher and like other posters have stated, giving birth is something women are made to do.

I know all women tear in labor. The thought of episiotomy sounds even worse. I'm getting upset just thinking about it. Sigh...Chat Icon

All of you other women sound so brave.

I think you are getting all worked up here for no reason. I am going to qulaify what I will say next by telling you I do not mean to be rude at all. But I think you are also a bit uneducated. You have fear of the unknown. Why don't you sign up for a labor and delivery class? One book that I read that really helped me see the advantages of V birth(and I'm having twins!) was Misconceptions by Naomi Wolf. Maybe you should read it. Also talk to your DH-this is what he does for a living. get educated and then make your decision. Also speak with your Dr. You could try perineal massage which is supposed to reduce the chances of tearing. Good luck
