Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
I was talking with DH last night and we are torn if we will take any birthing prep classes. Im not sure if its a waste of time and money, since Im going go out on a limb here and say a lot of woman forget what they learn and wing it.
So is anyone NOT taking any pre-baby classses?
Or has anyone not done it and how was birth?

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
DH and I took Lamaze class when I was preggo with DS and to be honest it was a waist of money.. All they do is show you things you read on the internet and how to breathe...
When I went into labor with DS all DH could say is breathe... breathe... I told him you f*ing breathe.. this hurts.... You forget to do everything they say... and well for me it was a waste because I ended up having a c-section after 5 hours of labor... due to fetal distress... and my bp was really high....

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
I'm not taking anything, but that's mostly because I knew I'd be having a scheduled c-section.
Jenn, have you gone for the maternity tour yet? We're going on Tuesday!

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
my sister took lamaze and she said it was a total waste of time.....
the only reason i'm taking a class is because I'm giong straight natural at home so I wanted to try some other forms of coping.
As for breathing etc, most women when they go into labor finding their own breathing pattern that works for them naturally wihtout being taught. I think the pattern breathing they teach in lamaze and some other classes is unecessary. JMO

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
taking an infant cpr class, thats all, i was registered for both a childbirth class, that was basically lamaze and thought about it and cancelled it as well as a breastfeeding class which i later found out was offered while im in the hospital for free, so cancelled that as well...

I give tons of credit.. I wish I was strong enough to do it at home, I have heard that it is less stress on you during delivery. For you the class may be very helpful they do teach breathing and how to relax... I just wish it worked for me... Good Luck...

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
I only took the breastfeeding class and even that really wasn't a help. Unless you are going natural and plan on using a certain method, like Bradley, the only useful thing I did was the hospital tour.

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
i just rented dvds... the one class I DO recommend is a BF'ing class.... it's so helpful to get the baby to properly latch right after birth.... now, BFing is a breeze

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
with DD#1 i took a birthing class and a breastfeeding class. what i got out of it was more hospital related than the actual process. i was more interested in knowing how they did things, not how the process works in general, and i did get that information at the classes.
i won't be taking any classes with DD#2.

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
I'm not. I figure I'll just wing it. I heard that if you practice yoga, the breathing is similar, so I will do that--or whatever they tell me when the time comes!

Re: Is anyone NOT taking any classes??
Well, isn't THIS a timely discussion!
I actually signed up for the New Baby Belly class, but got REAMED today from my doctor because "we are not taking 6 lamaze sessions". She feels we are not going to be prepared, DH will bring me back and forth to the hospital unnecessarily before 's time and she also said that LIJ "will really need to bend the rules to let him in the delivery room without a lamaze certificate".
Sounds like total BS to me, especially because I know people who had their first child at LIJ w/o taking lamaze.
Plus what about the people who don't HAVE an extra $200 or so or time in general to take a class?!
