Ultrascreen
Hi Ladies,
What can I expect at my ultrascreen? How long does it take etc?
Is the ultrascreen an internal or external sonogram?
TIA!

Re: Ultrascreen
external.. length depends on how coroperative the baby is. The tech needs a side profile of baby to measure back of neck. If baby is in position and lying still its really quick. Try and not eat anything that makes the baby go nutty before taking like sugar.
eta: also this sono the baby looks like a baby.. so its even more excitting than the first one.

Ultrascreen is a sono.. just call it ultrascreen, they also call it nuchal fold test. Depends on doctors office what they want to call it. They do a sono and measure back of baby necks for downs.

An ultraSOUND and a sonogram are the same thing. The ultraSCREEN is a specific diagnostic screening that combines an ultrasound/sonogram of the back of the baby's neck with bloodwork from you to screen your chances of Down's.

i know it can get confusing. On here youll hear different terms for different things. Anatamy scan, 20 week sono, level II... etc.. same but different name.

Re: Ultrascreen
Mine was external but have heard of some women having it internally when the doc or tech can't get the measurements. Length varies - mine was well over an hour bc my baby wouldn't keep still!
An ultrasound and sonogram are the same thing. The ultrascreen (also called nuchal translucency or 1st tri screening) is a sonogram coupled with bloodwork that measures risk for downs syndrome and trisomy. It is not a diagnosis of these issues but simply a screening - doc will give you a ratio of your potential and may recommend more invasive testing if risk is on the higher side. The ultrascreen is done between 11w and 13w6d.

Re: Ultrascreen
Make sure you remember the get the blood test for NT. The nurse wouldn't have given me the blood test if I didn't remind them. I know I read one girl on here was upset because she ended up leaving the ultrascreen without the blood test and they couldn't do the NT testing.
