Spinoff Breastfeeding.. Will DH feel left out

I really want DH to be apart of the feedings especially the nice 2 am 4 am feedings. I want to breast feed and that was i was thinking about pumping for him as well. I will only be home for the 3 months adn then we will both be working nites on opposite shifts so it is gonna be tough. As a Nurse though i dont know how I am going to pump at work. Im the manager on the floor and dont like to even leave the floor to eat let alone pump

Re: Spinoff Breastfeeding.. Will DH feel left out

DH is VERY supportive about breastfeeding. He really wants me to BF our daughter as long as we both can! I asked him about feeling left out and he said that he plans on getting up at night when I have to feed her and he will be involved by getting her and changing her before giving her to me.

I will probably try to pump some after 10-12 weeks when we have a good BF routine going. He doesn't feel he will bond with her any less by having me feed her.

Yeah, the thing with my DH is if he says he is going to do something, he NEVER backs out or changes his mind, so I know he will get up.

I told him he doesn't have to get up every night but he wants to so the more the merrier!Chat Icon

I will pump and BF. Dh really wants to feed the baby, and I don't mind pumping. We'll see how it works out.

My DH did get up with me a few times in the beginning, but with him going back to work right away, I honestly didn't see the point in both of us getting no sleep.

DD was up every 2 hours to BF. That is from the time she got up. So if she woke up at 2am, fed until 2:30 or so, than I changed her, rocked her back to sleep etc. until 3am, she would be up at 4am. You will be VERY tired in the beginning, and I didn't see having DH go to work exhausted.Chat Icon

I will probably pump after about a month of a solid BFing routine. Its important to dh and I to BF and also have him involved but want to establish my supply and not intro the bottle too early. From what I've learned in class its best to hold off on the bottle for awhile but not too late especially for women going back to work.

Re: Spinoff Breastfeeding.. Will DH feel left out

When my DS was a newborn, he would put his hands arms up and his hands were kind-of in front of his mouth, while screaming his head off to BF. My DH was up at every feeding because he had to pry his arms apart so that I could get him latched on. He definitely wasn't left out of night-time feedings.

If you are going to replace a night-time feeding w/ EBM, you need to pump while DH is giving the bottle so that you're supply matches the baby's intake and schedule.

I always BFed the night-time feedings. Once we got the hang of BFing, it was so much easier and faster for me to do it. When we were introducing the bottle before I returned to work, I would pump in the evening and my DH would do that feeding.

DH never felt left out. He was the one that burped them afterward.

From my experience, it really wasn't that important for DH to feed the baby. He did it a couple of times, but he didn't feel any less of a bond because our baby was exclusively breastfed.

There are lots of other ways for fathers to be involved -- they can rock the baby to sleep, hold the sleeping baby on their chests, change the diapers. If you want him to help with the night feedings pump once during the day. I used to pump around 9:00 am when DS took his nap (supply is highest in the morning). Then you'll have a bottle ready for the nighttime feeding.

Pumping at work can be challenging, but you can do it. I pumped for a year -- but I only worked 3 days a week and I had a private office where I could close the door on my own schedule.
