Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

What is your view on this? i would like to use them in the beginning but not forever. I here does help decrease the chance of sids as well.

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

Yay if your baby takes to it and it is calming (for everyone) then do it. I'm a pediatrician and plan on using one if my baby is interested. Just be sure to get rid of it early on before they can argue with you! There can be dental issues if it is used for prolonged periods of time.

I'll tell you what....

I was ADAMANT that my DD was not going to use one/get used to one/have an opportunity to have one in her mouth.

Then she was born.....

I saw the hand go near her mouth, and I REFUSED to allow her to be a thumb sucker. You can get rid of/donate the binky to the binky fairy... You cannot however do so with a thumb!

She is now a binky sucker, and I'm proud to admit it! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree with everything said. My DD is in the same boat! I know I'll be able to get rid of the binky as soon as I'm ready to listen to her howl for a few days. But I've already cut her down to just sleeping, so I think she is ok for now. If she had her thumb, she'd be at it all day -- I can say this because if she finds a binky behind the crib or lying around somewhere, she pops it in her mouth and loves every minute of it. I then have to remind her that it has to be put away until bedtime. And she complies.

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

I gave to dd because they reduce the chance of SIDS, shes 1 year now and wanted to have her off by now. Im limiting them to bedtime and trying to slowly ween off hopefully by the time baby #2 is born, shell be off. Im doing same with baby #2

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

i HATE pacifiers. i figured i'd let DS try one and see if he wanted it. luckily DS doesn't want one.

the doctor said that the hand in the mouth is perfectly fine as long as it's not the thumb. the hand in the mouth is a soothing technique. DS sucks on his hands here and there but i'm so glad he doesn't like the pacifier because it can be so hard to break.

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

I think it depends on the baby...my daughter needed it to soothe herself between feedings so she didn't use me as the human pacifier (which I was for the first 5 weeks)...I didn't give it to her until 5 weeks though, when we had established a good breastfeeding connection...with this baby, I will definitely wait again, but I will use it if it seems to be soothing...my daughter is very attached to her "paci" at 17 months, but we limit it to the crib, which works well for us and her...

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

I don't plan on using them at the beginning. I've read that women who plan on BFing shouldn't use them for the first month. Of course, if nothing else helps to calm the baby, I'll use them.

I agree, I plan on using a pacifier (if the baby is even intereseted) I sucked my fingers until I was in 4th grade Chat Icon My Mom tried putting stuff on my fingers to make them taste bad, I would just wash it off. I finally stopped when I got braces. I think a pacifier will be easier to get rid of.

My DS decieded this for himself- hated it from day one Chat Icon ....I don't personally feel theres anything wrong with them- I know its bought some of my friends some much need peace at times Chat Icon ...And if a child does need something to suck on for comfort, a pacifier can eventually be weaned, a thumb it attached for life !

Same with my DD too. We didn't want her to use one, but she had colic, so we tried EVERYTHING to make her happy, incl. pacifiers, and she wouldn't take it.

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

Yay, but next time I will take it away around 12 mos old, not much later. I am not a fan of older kids having them and DS seemed to get attached between 12 and 16 mos. I actually got very lucky with getting him off it, but I decided next time around I will take it away around 1 yr old.

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

Bottom line...you can plan til you are blue in the face but you won't know til you have your child. I was dead set against them. The militant lactation consultants will tell you that the only thing that should go in a breast-fed child's mouth is the breastChat Icon . Yeah, ok. Um no sorry. I cannot put my nipple in Abby's mouth while putting her in the car seat to calm her down. (Though it would be interesting to see.) When she is screaming at the top of her lungs as the paint peels off the wall, I will give her a pacifier and deal with orthodontic or other issues later.

I will use one if needed until 1 yr hopefully at max (recommended age to stop using them).

I will use one if DD takes it and it calms her. But will only use it for a short while.

There is a pic from my level II in my album of DD sucking her thumb! I was a thumb sucker and I turned out ok Chat Icon

Re: Yay or NAy on pacifiers!

I offerd it to my dd when she was an infant but she never took to it Chat Icon one less thing to break her out of, IMHO

Unless my child REALLY needs it, I will not be offering it to any future children either Chat Icon

ITA!

I was dead set against it, mostly b/c when it falls out at night you have to constantly go in to put it back in her mouth. However, after 5 weeks of screaming from 5pm on and all the time in the car, I gave in. She was like a new baby after that, it was so soothing to her, than I felt so bad I never gave it to her! You won't know your child until they are born! Chat Icon
