I think words change over time and calling something "gay" isn't a big deal.
I think what is more insulting to homosexuals is when heterosexuals call themselves "straight." Now THAT implies a very negative meaning towards homosexuals. If I were a homosexual, I imagine I'd be more offended by someone saying they're straight than a couple of kids calling a statue "gay."

BuT i think that homosexuals do believe that calling someone "gay" is offensive.
Essentially people are associating gay with a negative connotation. That's offensive - at least I think so.
