Insurance?

Hi ladies,

Trying to figure out insurance for next year knowing that we are TTC. Does anyone have a HealthFund? I am trying to figure out how much it costs for a pregnancy (prenatal care/the actual labor/postnatal care). DH wants to take a plan with copays and I want to take a plan that has an annual deductable of $3000 but not other costs besides that (no copays etc).

Help!

Re: Insurance?

I don't have any answers for you but wanted to recommend that you X-post this question on the pregnancy board.

Re: Insurance?

You should be able to call the insurance company directly and get all of that information up front since even individual plans with each carrier vary. This is what we did before we got PG.

Re: Insurance?

well i didnt realize i'd be pregnant and last year I signed up for the 'high deductible' program with $1500 ded. Be careful to know if there's still a max out of pocket limit. Mine was $1500 ded then they paid 80% of everything and I paid 20% but no more copays.

The cost monthly was a HUGE savings over the one with the copay. I just wish id had time to save up for all those lil charges..each ultrasound and sonogram, tests, etc.. it adds up!

Good Luck

Re: Insurance?

I have a health savings account where the deductible is funded entirely by my employer. The only thing I pay is my % of the premium, which is less than the premium I'd pay for the POS plan. I will likely use up the entire deductible just on prenatal appointments, testing and sonograms. I'm planning on switching plans at the next enrollment period, but I want to make sure what I'd be responsible for in terms of hospital (labor and delivery) costs under each plan.

I personally think HSAs are great for those who are very healthy and rarely go to the doctor and those who are ill and/or have very expensive medications.

Re: Insurance?

I posted how much it cost for my labor and delivery and nursery care. I can't remember, but I'll do a search. I think it was almost 20k for that alone, not including the doctor visits/tests, etc.

only the delivery:
$4200 for midwife and $12,746 for hospital stay, $4k for the anesthesiologist and around $6k for the nursery care. $150 each time the ped. saw the baby.

Most insurances though, you only pay one co-pay at your first prenatal visit, then nothing after that for office visits unless you see a specialist.

This is true with POS plans, but not with HSAs and other high deductible plans.

ETA: To the OP: You really need to look at your individual plan and see what it covers. Every plan is different.
