This is probably a dumb question

but I was induced with my first so I really don't know the answer to this. If you are home and your water breaks or you are having contractions and your doctor tells you to go to the hospital do you go straight up to L&D or to the Admission office. When I was induced I had to go to the Admissions office first and they called a nurse to come down and get me.

This is where I will be delivering but I thought I remembered from when I had my DD seeing women who were or thought they were in labor go straight to L&D. Actually I saw both (women go to L&D and women go to admissions). Wasn't sure what was right. Thanks!

Re: This is probably a dumb question

I would say if your in labor go straight to L&D and from there they might tell DH to go to admit you... But what woman in labor wants to go admit themselves while having contraction... NOT ME... Your fist concern should be to make sure the baby is ok and your not going to deliver while trying to wait for someone to admit you ...

I am not sure if every hospital is the same but when my water broke & my contractions were 5 mins apart with DS, my dr told me to go to the hospital & I went to L&D. Admissions already had all my paperwork & I was already in the computer.

My water broke at 2am, the OB had me go right to the hospital, and because it was the middle of the night I had to go into the Emergency room entrance of St. Charles Hospital. She processed whatever paperwork was necessary right there. It was probably easier for me since I was in the day before for pre-surgical testing because I was scheduled for a C-section just a few hours after my water broke. That took a few minutes and they she took me straight up to labor and delivery.

I believe on the tour they told us if we did arrive to the hospital in labor (during the regular open hours) you come in the main entrance, have DH go to admissions first, and then they will send you up to L&D.

Re: This is probably a dumb question

When I passed out this summer, I had been 35 weeks along. They sent me right to L and D and I was not in labor. Sometimes it depends on how far along you are as to where and how they treat you. At LIJ, you go right to L and D when you are in labor. You check in and within about 10 minutes or so, you are being examined.
