Yes, it's completely safe to use a heating pad. You can use it for up to 1/2 an hour, so long as it's not on your front.
I have been through hell during this pregnancy, so I consider myself a good source of information.

I have also been given the green light for a localized heating pad during PG. Feel better. Back pain is the worst.

You can use a heating pad on your back. I did all the time, especially in the 3rd trimester when I was having more lower back pain. Just don't leave it on for a long time, cycle it. Feel better.

i was actually told NOT to, and i was in a really bad accident at 8weeks, they told me to use ice instead..
make sure you ask
