Who Won The Debate?

Was it Joe's level-headed, detail-oriented specific references or was it Palin's charisma, smiles, big word choices and marketing finesse?

Biden.
He wasn't perfect. But he had more clarity and focus. He was able to speak to the questions directly.
Palin annoys me, so I may be baised. I found her to stray from the questions. I find her constant smiles unnerving. I found her smug for no reason.

At the end of the debate, I liked Biden more and Palin less.

Re: Who Won The Debate?

Biden....me too. But I do know that that Palin's style and her ability to be a mom, a woman and a candidate with big promises (and little ideas) can potentially fool those who don't listen carefully. I don't care if I can identify with her as a middle class woman...so that strategy didn't work for me. I needed more substance than I think she offered. I think Biden did very well in anwering the questions and garnering my belief in his knowledge and expertise. I do think that Palin doesn't have the experience and so we can't expect her to speak in detail to what she doesn't know. But, she's a real master of avoidance. I hope that people see that she spent more time in marketing herself, rather than revealing herself. I don't want a bumper sticker, I want a leader.

Biden.

Palin did not answer any questions, unless it was 20 minutes later. And even then, it wasnt a good answer.

This is exactly what I was going to say.

I will admit, I am NOT a fan of Palin--but I was impressed early on with her ability to connect to the audience. And to someone who was only half-listening, or to someone not completely comfortable with political discourse, she sounded very intelligent.

But there's no denying that most of her answers were not in reference to the question being asked. She clearly went back to her list of "safe topics" again and again, and while I think that will win lots of people over, it does nothing for those of us who wanted to hear something substantial from her.

Re: Who Won The Debate?

Palin redeemed herself somewhat but she didn't win any independents or undecided voters tonight.

Biden definitely showed his experience by answering most of his quesitons with specific references and not just giving many of them the runaround.

He also treated Palin with courtesy and don't think that was reciprocated.

Biden won because Palin couldn't answer specifics.

Neither. She didn't answer anything and went back to the cutesy talk and winking which is annoying.

And whatever Biden did to his face was so disturbing I can't even look at him. Back off the Botox.

I think Biden, but i think Palin did a good job too. I agree with some others, she didn't answer all the questions and she definitely had prefabricated answers that she pushed.

But clearly, she is an intelligent woman who has earned this nomination. I just think she doesn't speak well off the cuff and I think she is really scared by the national media.

Agreed. Biden had more substance, and Palin had more sound bites. It was a draw.

I don't think it was a draw. I think Biden won. As a practical matter, they need to sway independent voters in these debates. I don't think Palin exuded enough knowledge or confidence to "win" those voters.

I don't agree. And I don't agree with anything Obama and Biden stand for.

Re: Who Won The Debate?

Last week I said that McCain won his debate by a slim margin.

Tonight I say that Biden won the debate by a significant margin.

He was HEAVILY favored to win this debate and the expectations for Palin were about as low as they could be. People expected her to literally crap her pants onstage.

Palin exceeded expectations by a large margin, but she had many stumbles. She kept circling back to energy, even when the question wasnt about energy. How it was that she went from a question on healthcare to her energy platform is still making me Chat Icon She had her opportunities to go after Biden - specifically Biden's having said that Obama wasn't qualified, etc. While she did bring that up - her answer wasnt aggressive enough or direct enough. It was easily deflected and I dont think people will be talking much about that tomorrow.

Biden was clear, concise (a first for him) and mastered the soundbite. When the pundits have their say (I didnt watch the post debate coverage) they are going to focus on the sentences that stuck out - my guess is that they'll focus on these from Biden:

He's no maverick (and his explanation of McCain's record)

McCain voted against funding the troops

Cheney was the most dangerous VP in history

And they'll mention his tearing up when he spoke of losing his wife and infant daughter - and almost losing his sons in the same accident.

From Palin - well, honestly, the standouts arent quite the same -

Say it ain't so Joe

He's a maverick, I'm a maverick

I might not answer the questions the way you want me to. . .

Joe six pack

Biden won the debate partly because he understood that the most important part of the debate is the counterpunch - the 30 seconds you have to respond to your opponent - that was where he consistently looked right at the camera and would break his answer down to one soundbite or two. I know it's not our favorite way to debate - but thiis is the strategy that works.

I think Palin did better than people thought she would do - but some of her blunders (I've only been doing this for 5 weeks - what a way to instill confidence!) were pretty bad.

I also think her handlers made a big mistake in this new strategy they have - anytime Obama and Biden link McCain to Bush, Palin scolds them and says "you're talking about the past - we're about the future." I think that is a ridiculous response. As Biden said - the past is prologue.

I think she's a likable person - I think she connects well with an audience - I'm sure I'd get along with her were I to meet her. But in terms of who demonstrated the leadership, experience and platforms necessary to get us out of this economic crisis and neverending war - I think the majority of pollsters are going to give this to Biden.

You might not agree with his policies - but in terms of who managed their 2 minute answers and 60 second rebuttals better - I'd definitely go with Biden.
