Dropside or No Dropside

I know it's been discussed before, but I was wondering which way you were going in terms of a crib. A woman a work told me I would regret not getting a dropside and that it was a big mistake. All of the cribs I love don't have them. Thoughts?

We are not getting one... I personally don't like them, but DH and I are both tall, so it's a non issue.

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

For me, I know I couldn't have a crib that didn't have a dropside. I am only 5 feet and knew I would have trouble reaching in to get the baby. Even now, with my DD almost 2.5 yrs old, I still sometimes lower the side to get her, like if she is sleeping or sick or something. My DH is 6 feet and has never had to lower the side. I really think it depends on if you're able to reach all the way in or not.

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

Ours has a drop-side- For us it works out well...When the mattress is in the lowest position, its easier to change the sheets for me....Also- now that my DS is almost 3, we just have the drop-side rail down all the time, with the mattress in its lowest position, so it basically serves as a bed-rail...My DS can climb out safely (whether the rail is up or down- they try to climb out at one point, so I'd rather him hopping over the low and not the high rail Chat Icon ) I'm also a shorty at just barely 5-2 !

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

I'm on the short side so we opted for a dropside crib. I thought it would be particularly useful when I'm pregnant again and wouldn't be able to bend over to pick up DD out of the crib.

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

Ours doesn't have a dropside. I didn't like how any of them looked and I'm 5'6" and Dh is 5'11''. I think it'll be okay without.

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

We did not get a drop side crib, I wanted more of a sleigh at the end. Dh and I are both tall though, so I don't think it will be a problem.

DITTO DITTO and DITTO!

there's no reason for them if you're tall enough to reach in when the mattress is on a lower level.....

Our crib has a drop side and I love it, I'll know better once Chat Icon is here, but looks like it will be helpful

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

I was DYING to get a dropside crib since I have a bad back, but I couldn't find one ANYWHERE that I liked. So we have a fixed rail, but I know I'm going to regret that. Chat Icon

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

I really wanted a dropside crib, however we ended up with a fixed rail convertible crib. Hope we don't regret it!

I have a dropside and between my c-section, being on the shorter side and having a bad back, I wouldn't have been able to ever reach in and get him out if I didn't have it.

5'2 here and didn't get a dropside with my DD and never had a problem. I just liked the style of the non dropside much better.

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

I personally am not a fan of a dropside crib. We got a Generation next, which has 3" that fold over. It is a pretty hard mechanism to work (you cannot shake it loose like a drop-down crib) and it is very sturdy. DHs test when we bought the crib was: he would to up to the crib and shake it. If it rattled or felt loose or poorly made (his words, not a commentary on others' cribsChat Icon ) he kept looking. This one, he said, felt like it was cemented to the ground so it is the one we got.Chat Icon

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

We are not getting a dropside. I thought that they weren't very common anymore because of safety issues.

Re: Dropside or No Dropside

I'm short too (5'4) but the crib we liked did not have a drop side. It didn't deter us. I just figure if it's a problem then DH is going to have to help!
