CWC-Smithtown-Disappointing apt

Ok, so I knew Paone left (he was my fav). So I saw Dr. Rubin. I saw her pre-pregnancy, but this was the first time I saw her preggo. I told her my concerns with c-sections (I personally find them done way too often). I said, I just want to make sure the new doctors know this upfront that I do wish to try and not go c-section if possible. Well no surprise, she got defensive. (I know, I know, its there jobs).

Then, I say "so next apt is my gluclose" and she says "yes". I proceed to ask if they do it on the weekends because I can only do evening apts during the week and won't the results be skewed getting tested at like 7pm at night. She said "no, if your dibetic, your dibetic, won't matter what time of day". So then I ask about fasting, she says not neccessary.

Ok, I'm fairly laid back, but won't my results be a little skewed at 7pm after a full day of working and eating 2 meals, etc?

Overall, I didn't have a great feeling about Dr. Rubin. So far, McKenna is my new fav (since Paone left) but with all these changes, it won't matter anyway.

GRRR, also in a bad mood because I gained 7lbs (most ever!!). Everyone agrees its probably because of my thyroid condition (which my meds have been altered 4x throughout this pregnancy)

Ugh. I know a lot of the labs are open very early, maybe you can go before work? That way you wouldn't have to be thinking about it all day. I was told I didn't have to fast for the 1hr either. Granted I failed but that is another story!

see I'm afraid of failing, especially if I'm taking it at 7pm at night. I asked "can I take it Saturday AM with the NP and then sked a dr apt during the week" and Dr. Rubin was like "not gonna make a difference either way"

So that means all day I know (myself) will eat like a bird, have no soda (I usually have 1 soda a day around 3pm) and be totally stressing.

McKenna is nice but man o man he gave me an internal the other day that made me see stars Chat Icon His hands are gignormous!

I went first thing in the morning to test with my DD and I passed. With my DS this time I went at night and failed and had to do the 3 hour(which I wound up passing). Personally I would try to get an early am appt. Sorry your appt was disappointing. I felt the same way when I left there last week too Chat Icon

Re: CWC-Smithtown-Disappointing apt

I personally love Dr. Rubin. I saw her yesterday too.
She had a very long day yesterday - I had an 11am appointment and didn't see her until 2 because she had an emergency at the hospital. Maybe you just caught her at the end of a really long day... she is usually so nice and very accomodating. I would give her a second chance.

About the GT - I didn't ask about it since I am going back in 2 weeks, not 4. But I am pretty sure its standard not to fast for it.

And I thought I'd add - when I had my adventure in L&D monday night, Dr. Gentelesco (?) and Marin (?) were on call, so they are defintely covering CWC.

Sorry to hear you had a disappointing appointment. I actually see Dr. Amorin and I LOVE her! She is so sweet and my MIL is a nurse at St. Catherines in L&D and recommended me to her out of all the doctors actually. She is young but she is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. She also has a child of her own so she can relate to most of my concerns. I highly recommend her. I feel so comfortable with her and I feel like I can tell her anything.

Re: CWC-Smithtown-Disappointing apt

I'm sorry you had a disappointing appointment. Hopefully, as the other ladies have said, it was just a long difficult day for your Dr.

About the Glucose test, my Dr. said I should fast for the 1 HR, if your appt is at 7PM and you have your last meal at 3PM you should be fine. I wouldn't worry about eating light all day, but skipping the soda is probably a good idea.

Dr Paone delivered DS...but Ive met Dr Rubin and I liked her very much.

You have to remember one thing about c-sections...and try and not blame the doctors...it all comes down to $$$ and not for the reasons you may think. They dont perform c-sections to make more money...or b/c they are scalpel happy. Medical malpractice insurance for OBGYNs is astronomical on Long Island. We live in a litigious society where we dont think twice about suing doctors for anything that goes wrong. Whether they are to blame or not. Doctors now a days tend to air on the side of caution and opt to perform a c-section when things dont go totally routine.

I didnt have to fast before my 1 hour. I was told just not to have a milk shake right before. If you are super concerned I would just not eat past 3 or 4. You'll be fine.

Incidently..My levels get screwed up b/c of fasting before the 1 hour....

I also go there. I ate all day normally and did the test at 7 pm. It was fine.

Re: CWC-Smithtown-Disappointing apt

GD girl here...

I was also told by my OB that it doesn't make a difference whether I fast or not... HOWEVER, when I got to the lab (quest), they would have turned me away if I was NOT fasting before the 1 hour.... It was 730AM, so I just happened to not eat, so I was ok....

See if you can go well before you have to go to work, and just fast anyway. It doesn't HARM the test results if you fast, and the lab insisted on it despite what my OB said.

(besides, intellectually, it doesn't make sense that not fasting doesn't affect the test! if you were to eat a giant salad with fatty dressing... high fiber, high fat, low carb... and then you drink the drink, it will slow carb absorption in your GI tract.... which will in turn affect your insulin response. you're supposed to get a giant woosh of glucose at time zero and have an hour for your body to respond! On the flip side, if you were to eat a sugary breakfast, you'll already have 40g of glucose in you before you even drink the drink.... and your insulin response would have started BEFORE time zero...)

Re: CWC-Smithtown-Disappointing apt

I may get flamed for this but I had several bad experiences with Dr. Rubin. I am definitely not a fan of hers.

At one appointment I actually ended up sorta fighting with her and she walked out w/o answering any of my questions so I marched down the hall and sat in Dr. Paone's office and waited for him. The woman had me in tears - i found her to be extremely rude.

When I went to schedule my induction with Jack the receptionist said Dr. Rubin is on call on this day and both my mom and I went "NOOOOOOOO" and the receptionist at the time laughed a little too hard.

I'm still upset that Dr. P left - of course I wish him nothing but the best but I definitely would have liked to say goodbye. He delivered both my kids and used to keep a pic of the kids in his office LOL - will miss him.

Re: CWC-Smithtown-Disappointing apt

I'm surprised people had bad experiences with Dr. Rubin. I always saw her before being PG and I thought she was great!! I really like this practice and hope the doctors are not starting to get overwhelmed since Dr. Paone left. I wish they weren't going through so many changes now that I'm PG.
Sorry, you had such a bad experience. Hopefully next appointment will go better.

Re: CWC-Smithtown-Disappointing apt

I'm sorry your D got so defensive with you regarding teh c-section.

As for the glucose test, she is right. Fasting is not needed and shouldn't be done before the test. Just try not to eat a lot of sugary stuff but make sure you eat healthily.

If you fast, you can actually cause glucose surges in your body that will give false readings.
