Fifths Disease!! (added more info)

So there is a student in my calss w/ 5th disease. Nurses at school dont seem too concerned although the entire staff rec'd an email regarding this and that all PG women should tell nurses.

Anyone know anything about this???

i did have bloodwork alst night and i called my dr and they said they wont have results til Fri. so i wont know until then if i am immune. Dr office said there isnt much that can be done.

I know that at one time they used to remove teachers who were PG but nurses here said they dont do that anymore.

Re: Fifths Disease!!

You need to find out if you are immune to it...call you dr.

ETA: If you don't know, and have to go get bloodwork, I would not continue working in your classroom until you find out. Even though the children are not contagious once they find out the have fifths (once the rash comes out), they could have passed it on to someone else.

Yes. I was exposed to Fifth's Disease and had to go to my OB for a blood test to see if I was exposed. I was immune to it because I must have had it at one time or another.

I would call your OB and get the blood test.Chat Icon

Re: Fifths Disease!!

Pg women are not supposed to be around those with 5ths disease. If the child is in your class, he/she or you should be removed I believe.

You may very well be immune since you work with kids (I am highly immune and I worked with kids) but since you don't know, this is a concern you need to address.

I would call in sick to work until you have blood work done just to be safe.

Re: Fifths Disease!!

In my school, all pg women are put on administrative leave immediately until given the ok from their OB (usually through bloodwork to determine if you are immune).

Re: Fifths Disease!!

I am assuming that work does not know you are PG b/c you are so early?

I would call the OB and get their input. They may ask you to come in right away for blood work if they did not do so at your appointment last night.Chat Icon

They really should remove you from the classroom unless they know that you are immune. Do people at work know that you are pregnant? This is something that should not be messed around with. If they will not give you a different placement until you find out, I would call in sick.

When I was exposed to chicken pox, I had to take 3 sick days, because they had never dealt with it before and weren't sure what the protocol was. Then they were going to place me in another school. I get to the school that day to find out that they had chicken pox as well. I had to use 2 more sick days.

I agree!

When I was pregnant with DS, I tested positive for Fifth's Disease when they did the big blood work up during my 1st trimester. I had to go see a high risk dr and have a special sono done. It can be very serious for the fetus/baby.

Fortunately they think my result was a false positive considering I am not a teacher, hadn't been around anyone that had it that I knew of nor ever had it myself.

If you are waiting for test results, then I would get your Dr to sign a release that you are at risk (even if you are not realy, KWIM?). I am pretty sure that the school cannot interfere in that manner.

Re: Fifths Disease!! (added more info)

I have been exposed to fifths disease 3 times during this pregnancy and I am not immune. In my district, I had to get a letter from my doctor stating I had to be removed from the building for 2-3 weeks due to other possible cases (incubation period) and I was moved to another building. If possible, I would take the next few days off till you know if you are immune. Better safe then sorry. If you cant, then I would avoid getting too close to any of the kids. Fifths spreads through contact.
