7 week old addicted to pacifier??

my MIL suggested for my 7 week old sonto start using the pacifier, as he seemed continuously hungry even after a feeding. we have been using it for the past 3 days, and now I feel he is addicted to it. he will not stop crying until it is back in his mouth, i was dreading that this was going to happen. Now the only time he is actually content is when he has that thing in his mouth, i don't know what to do should i just take it away from him and let him cry until he is so exhausted that he just falls to sleep on his own or forgets about it. I also am dreading sleep time tonight as last night he would wake up every fifteen minutes because the pacifier fell out of his mouth, he eventually became so tierd that he fell asleep. Just want to know how others experienced the pacifier use with their newborns.

Re: 7 week old addicted to pacifier??

He is too young to let him CIO. Let him have the pacifier...it is comforting for him. I went through the same thing with my DS losing the pacifier when he was sleeping and crying for it...eventually they are able to find it and put it back in on their own. As he gets a little older, he will become interested in other things and won't need the pacifier all the time. DS now only uses the pacifier at night when he sleeps. He is 17 months old and I still let him use it at night. Eventually he will give it up on his own or the bink "fairy" will come Chat Icon

ETA: I am not sure how big your baby is but DS was and still is a big eater. He was drinking 3-4 oz. every 3 hours by the time he was a week old. How much is your DS eating?

It's a comfort thing. Ale was like that but as she got a little older needed it less and less. I would let him have it for now.

I have given it up in the crib, b/c I hated being the paci police as she awoke every 10 minutes like you said!!! I just didn't do it the next night, and let her nurse for a few minutes. That keeps her longer than the paci, I know it's not the best habit either but I literally would have to stand in the doorway waiting for her to lose it b/c the minute I hit the pillow it would fall out. The same for the car too, than she cries until I have to pull over to put it back in. It will be months until they can find it and put it back in themselves. So, I let her have it during the day, only if she is very upset. Otherwise, your DS is probably hungry and I would feed more often or more oz. Good luck and I say ditch the paci at night!!!! At 7 weeks they don't know addiction. They just know comfort. When he is old enough to pull it out it probably won't stay in anymore. If at 6mos you have this prob then you let him CIO. 7 weeks WAY to young.

D-I-T-T-O!

At this point just be glad you can get him back to sleep w /it. Come 4 months he'll be able to find it on his own. DD is 11 months and has it for nap & bed. (and in the car if she's really whiney Chat Icon )
