Those who do/will feed their kids Organic -

I have a genuine question and I am truly not trying to be snarky - I am asking b/c I'm trying NOT to be judgemental actually -

DH's cousin is very strict with the dairy/produce her son eats - All of his dairy and fresh fruit/veggies MUST be organic or she throws a fit ..........

But, then she takes him to McDonald's, feeds him cookies and donuts and ice cream and Yoo Hoo and a ton of other 'junk food' ...(and this is on a regular basis, not as a random 'treat' here or there) He's also not even 2 years old and he immediately knows the orange dunkin donuts box which she opens up and lets him pick a WHOLE donut out of .. .........

So, my question is, Am I being crazy to Chat Icon at her when she feeds the kid dunkin donuts and McDonald's on a regular basis but flips out if there isn't organic milk in the house for him to drink? - I don't really know much about eating organic, so is there SOMETHING god awful in the dairy/fruit/veggies that could be seriously hazardous to him while McDonald's and Dunkin Donuts is perfectly fine?

wow...thats kind of weird.........

I'm not sure how mcuh organic we are giong to use.... We wash all of our fruits and veggies with veggie wash to try and eliminate as many pesticides as possible.

I think the only organic Item we may or may not sue would be milk because of the hormones/antibiotics in regualr milk that have been linked to starting puberty in children earlier than normal......But we still have more research to do...

Yeah it definately sounds like she is being a hypocrite. It's great if she chooses to feed her child organic and even if she chooses to "treat" him to DD or McD's. But to make a big fuss about it and then do all that on a regular basis is a little silly. No one is perfect- it sounds like she is trying to put up one image when in reality she is not like that at all.

Maddie gets SOME organic (all soy products, some fruits and veggies, and all meat). That said, I don't flip about giving her non-organic foods at other's houses.

I don't give her fast food regularly- just once in awhile and usually only french fries because I can't guarantee there's no dairy in anything else (she has a pretty severe milk allergy).

The only sweets she's allowed are Arrowroot cookies- no D&D.

I think this crazy-especially when she can go out and get her child organic versions of the same foods at Whole Fiids, Trader Joe's etc.

We are going to try with the organic foods and i have been doing my best(when I can) to eat organic when possible throughout my pregnancy. When I buy meat or milk it is organic-most fruits and veg are organic. However we will go out to eat and I know not everything I eat is iorganic there. However, pesticides and hormones build up in your body so I am trying to reduce my exposure not be a nazi about it.

Re: Those who do/will feed their kids Organic -

that's a little wierd.

I'm not a fanatical organic person.... (we DO buy a lot of 'regular' produce, and some 'regular' dairy). I AM a fervent advocate for home cooking and quality meats, cheeses, and avoiding processed foods. Frankly, I don't step foot in a Mcdonalds or doughnut shop, becuase they're the ipitomy of the term 'processed food'. Lots of preservatives, lots of additives, and the quality of the meat is questionable at BEST.

I am going to make my own baby food, of course... (I would never eat gerbers, so I won't make Scone do it)... and the emergency formula container I bought was natures best organic w/ DHA.....

We try to be as organic as possible, we shop at wholefoods when we can and i buy bell and evans chicken. my ds had mostly organic baby food but some jars weren't and i will do the same for dd. As for McDonalds, my ds has just started having happy meals and he eats two bites of a nugget if i am lucky. its the fries he likesChat Icon

That makes no sense that she flips out if organic isn't available but lets her son eat McDonald's (probably the furthest you can get from Organic).

In our home we try to do organic as much as possible but I am not anal about it. I mean you can put your kid in a box right? Birthday parties come along, do you tell them sorry you can't have any cake? Chat Icon

For us it's about trying to feed DD healthy foods as best we can when we can. We have been blessed with a VERY picky eater Chat Icon so you do the best you can.

love the idea of making your own baby food. Is there a book?
and where did you get the emergency formula?

thats ultra hypocrtical, and I bet you her child loves the orange box of DD bc she's normally so strict in the house that the kids just want the cr@p even more..I plan on getting organic as much as I can, but not be crazy about it, and the fact that she flips out when something isn't and then goes for some good old deep fried mcd's...um OK>....Chat Icon

I think it is weird, too. We gave Ben organic everything for the first year of his life (baby food, snacks, veggies, fruit, milk, cheese). Now we still give a lot of organic but do, on occasion, give him something that isn't. However we're not super-strict about it. DH and I eat a lot of organic but not 100%.

im not being a brat, but sounds like she doesnt know what she talking about then, b/c the organic milk and food doesnt do much for youre body if youre filling up on donuts, cookies with preservatives and then going overboard eating mcdonalds GREASE

Re: Those who do/will feed their kids Organic -

hmm, that is a huge contradiction!!
if she were to let him have mcdonalds or dds once in a while, i would say ok, it's a treat- but if it is pretty often then she is totally contradicting herself by flipping out if her child has non organic...

i see the importance of organic but ive been eating nonorganic for so many years..i'd like to buy organic but the cost is too high.
what i do instead is always check the box for ingrediants. i wont buy something if it has hfc or hydrgenated oils .. or enriched flour...
that sort of thing. i try to buy as least few prepared items as possible!! - like i'll buy a frozen pizza or waffles or a box of mac n cheese . i'll keep these items on hand b/c i know somedays i cant always cook a meal from scratch , so they become life savers...
its better than eating out when i dont feel like cooking at least..

Re: Those who do/will feed their kids Organic -

hmmmm. I am an organic mom and I eat an organic diet. I do cheat every now and again, but with DS I am pretty strict. He drinks organic milk & juice, I buy organic meals and we even get organic "foundation" foods (grains, beans, flour, etc), but it is not easy and at this point I still bring all his food with me when we eat anywhere that I am not cooking.

I will admit that I have let him chew on a heel of frozen Italian bread to help him teethe. But IMO the most important thing to keep organic are the raw foods (fruits, veggies, meats, eggs and milks...)

So to answer your question, I think if she makes such a big deal out of it I mightChat Icon if I saw her feeding fast food on a regualr basis.
