Anyone's DC stay on formula past 12 months?

DD was on Alimentum, and after her 1 year check up, we started switching to milk (whole milk). She became a different kid - fussy, cranky, gassy - like she was in the beginning.

So Dr. said to try soy. She was on soy for a full week, and while she seemed back to her normal personality, she was still pretty gassy. She was okay during the day, since she was moving...but it would wake her up at night...and her poop would go from one extreme to the other.

Spoke to Dr. today and she thinks we should go back to the Alimentum for a month and then try again...Anyone else have DC on formula for longer than one year? Did they transition well after that??

I kept DD on formula past 1 year b/c she really wasn't eating well and I felt that the formula was giving her complete nutrition. She never had a problem transitioning, I just did it when I felt she was eating well enough to come off it. I guess it was around 14 or 15 months.

Did you switch cold turkey or did you gradually mix milk and formula? If you went cold turkey, then I would go backwards, and start mixing milk and formula (4 ozs of each per bottle, then 2 oz formula, etc)

If you went gradually, then I would stick with the soy milk.

Sorry - I lost track of this thread...

We didn't go cold turkey, we tried 3/4 formula + 1/4 milk...then 1/2 and 1/2....when we went to soy, it was 1/2 and 1/2. But both were still causing her a lot of gas and "tummy trouble"

Anyone else have difficulty transitioning to milk?

Thanks!!!Chat Icon

My DD was also on Alimentum.
I did keep her on until 15 mths.
Two reasons was that Apri had sent me an additional case by accident and I was also leary of switching to milk right away as well...with the probs she had in past.

Transitioning was real easy too...just did 1/2 and 1/2 1st day, by day 3 it was reg whole milk.

She loves her milk!

I still give DS formula. But he gets milk too....

It might sound silly to some why...but it saves my sanity.

DS is one of 6 kids in my house. I go through a ton of milk and just never seem to be able to keep from running out. Ive tried putting DO NOT DRINK CADEN ONLY on a gallon but if they run out of theres they'll drink his...keeping him on formula saves me from running out and always have something to give him.

I told my ped and she said it's fine. I dont use a special formula though. We do either Walmart Brand Next Step or Next Step with coupons so cost wise it is pretty much the same as milk.

DS was on Alimentum until he was 18 months old. He would vomit if he had one sip of milk (soy or regular) and still does unless I put Ovaltine in it. He still suffers from awful acid reflux at over 2 years of age.
