How common do you think it is that you can have a normal AFP test and then have a child with ds?

The AFP only tells your chances of having a baby with ds, not if you do or not. Does anyone else know if anything would be seen on the ultrasound to suspect ds?

Re: Downs Syndrome

I dont know how common that would be but the level 2 would show certain DS markers in the heart and brain I believe, as well as certain measurements would be "off". Someone else correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Downs Syndrome

I worry about the same things.
We had 1st trimester ultra screen and a Level II ultrasound. Both were normal but for some reason I find myself freaking out about this with this pregnancy. I felt at ease with DD once we had the testing and ultrasound.

IDK, stranger things have happened. My neighbor had AFP and an amnio and BOTH said the chances of DS was VERY LOW. Her son was born months later with DS. Flip side of the coin.

Did you mean the ultrascreen? Amnio would show 100% if there was DS- there is no way the amnio could be wrong as it shows for certain the number of chromosomes the child has.

Re: Downs Syndrome

To answer the OP question- it's as common as the odds. Yes- it DOES happen that a normal screening could still result in the birth of a child with chromosomal abnormalities. There has to be a 1 in that 10,000 (or whatever your personal number is). It's still a low possibility, but it does happen.

Re: Downs Syndrome

I really think the ultrascreen sono and the level 2 should show some kind of "marker". If you don't have any markers for DS, I would think it would be very very unlikely.

Especially, with the Level 2.....it's such a detailed sono.
