Need Help Deciding About CVS!

I'm 7wks. 3days and just met with the high risk doctor for the first time. I explained that after having 3 m/c I'm really considering doing a CVS and wanted to know what he thought. Obviously, he said it's my decision, but he recommends doing the ultrascreen first and only doing the CVS if the results aren't good. I know the CVS does have some risk, but it's so much more definitive and from what I understand it can detect even more abnormalities than the ultrascreen. I'm so torn. Any advice or experiences with either of these tests would be greatly appreciated!

My SIL had the CVS. It is basically the same as the amnio. She said it wasn't THAT bad. Personally I would not have it unless the ultrascreen results came back questionable. Did you ever find out the causes of your recurrent m/cs?

By the way...sorry for your previous losses but congratulations on this pregnancy!!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We never found out the cause for my 1st m.c, but the 2nd was due to Trisomy 4. The 3rd was a chemical and in most cases those are chromosomal too. So, I just think they were all chromosomal which is why the idea of CVS to put my mind at ease sounds good.

I frankly don't know what my decision would be in your position. Your history would make me want to get the test done, but I am inherently scared of any invasive procedure... I tend to avoid them when a non-invasive alternative may suffice.

I guess the question you must ask yourself is 'if I get an ultrascreen and AFP done, and the results are very good, would I retain substantial doubt about those results?'

If the answer is an undeniable yes, then I would take the test.

Knowing me though, I'd probably do the ultrascreen and AFP first anyway, and then see if I still kept my decision with the CVS.....
