FREAKING OUT *Update*

I am freaking out.

Some of you might know from the pets board that we took in a stray cat about 3 months ago. She was pregnant, and we wanted to give her a safe place to have her kittens. She had 7 kittens, and we just adopted the first 2 out about 2 weeks ago.

My friend who adopted them just called to say that they are doing well, but that she took them to the vet and they tested positive for hookworm Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon. So I go online to research this, and find that while hookworm will just cause most people stomachache, they can be deadly to a fetus. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have a call in to my OB and I'm waiting to hear back--but I am totally freaking out. THANK GOD DH has been changing the litter box and not me--but I have still been handling the kittens.

I love it--I guess this is what I get for trying to do something good for another living being. Chat Icon

No. How would that help matters?

Our plan is to take them to the vet today to get them de-wormed, but dropping them at the shelter won't change the fact that I may have already been exposed to them. THAT'S why I'm freaking out.

right, I get that, but I'm sure your doc may recommend removing them from the household, no?

Re: FREAKING OUT

I'm sure its fine - you haven't been changing the litter or anything, right. I don't think you would be able to contract it from them just by petting them.

Re: FREAKING OUT

I also found this:

Can hookworms be transmitted to humans?

Feline hookworms do not infect humans internally. The tiny larvae can burrow into human skin, causing a disease called cutaneous larval migrans. Also known as "ground itch," this skin infection does not lead to maturation of the larvae. Because contact of human skin with moist, larvae-infected soil is required, infection rarely occurs when good hygiene is practiced.

Re: FREAKING OUT

I would say the likeliness is slim being that you aren't handling the box. Just from now on, make sure to wash your hands good! Please let us know what your OB says.

Re: FREAKING OUT

I would also ask the Vet about you getting infected. I suspect he may know better than even your OB what the odds of infection are, and what can be done.

it does seem unlikely that you caught it, though..... so frustrating and concerning Chat Icon

Re: FREAKING OUT *Update*

UPDATE:

Well, my OB had no idea what to tell me with this. BUT, we decided to take mama cat and the kittens to the vet right away. Once there, I asked the vet about it, and she said I have absolutely nothing to worry about. The only thing that can happens if humans come into contact with the larvae is it will try to burrow into the skin, causing a rash Chat Icon but it's unable to make it past the upper layers of skin.

I am SO TOTALLY RELIEVED!!

In other news, we had all the kittens dewormed, so we should be ok now! WHEW! Chat Icon
