Opinion(Nixzmary Brown Case)
NewsDay Article
In light of what happened w/ Nixzmary Brown( the child who was beaten to death by her stepfather) Do you think this case will actually make significant changes to the Dept. Of Child Protective Services? Six were disciplined and some terminated, do you really think this will change anything?

I think it may change things for a while - while the agency is under the public eye - but unfortunately I dont think any major permanent changes will happen.

Re: Opinion(Nixzmary Brown Case)
I think more funding is needed for this department. But then again, more $ is needed for the firemen, and the police, and teachers...it never seems to end. There simply aren't enough workers to cover the population of nuts out there.

Re: Opinion(Nixzmary Brown Case)
Last night watching the news coverage I couldn't help but cry my eyes out. It makes me angry to see that her community(teachers, family, neighbors) didn't see or imagined or just turned the other cheek to her situation. She missed 47 days of school some I imagine consecutively and no one ever wondered what's wrong here?

Re: Opinion(Nixzmary Brown Case)
Unfortunately it probably won't change anything. we had a case recently here in AZ where the kids were being kept in dog kennels. CPS had been involved prior to the incident, but didn't do anything. I think it's really in our hands to keep our eyes open, and if we see something that's not right, speak out until someone hears.

but to not say anything Jenn? I saw a child being abused verbally by her parent one. That little girl was frantic & scared and I spoke to the parent about the damage she was doing to her child. I called mall security. I don't know if she was arrested or anything further was done, but I let her know that it was NOT ok.

I think so too.
I don't see any significant, lasting changes happening. This is not the first child to die this way- why would changes happen now? What about Lisa Steinberg and Elisa Izqierdo and the others who have already died? Why didn't changes happen then? If they did something would have been done about this child.
There was a good editorial in the Daily News today, pointing out that *40* family members showed up to mourn the child. Where were these people when she was being beaten? They're very quick to cry in front of the cameras but chances are maybe one of them could have done something.
ETA: LadyLainez, the excessive absences were reported to ACS. Unfortunately, that is all that can be done at the school level. Attendance teachers/truant officers no longer exist and in all the years I have worked for the DOE I have only once or twice seen ACS respond to something that the school reported. We report excessive absence all the time and seldom is anything done.

It hasn't in the past, including all states. The system in inherently flawed. The actual job of being a CPS or ACS worker is extremely taxing and emotionally draining. For the level of danger presented to these workers, they don't get paid nearly enough. The agency itself, isn't funded enough to handle the workload.

I know....I saw that..where the hell were they when she was being beaten & starved. I watched a clip of one of her family members saying "we thought it was normal and it's part of our culture" If I saw a family memeber of mine abusing a child you better beleive I'll call the cops on them.

I am going to be honest, if i saw that i would have minded my own business.
If i saw a child getting beat...that is a different story.
And i am sure many people had said something about Nixmary, she was already in the system of CPS.
But i don't think people realize how hard this job really is.
People make abuse claims ALL THE TIME. And it is hard to find that proof to actually do something about it.
all i am saying is that it is a lot harder than people think

I don't know what the family was ignoring it for, but her school reported bruises MULTIPLE times and each time it was investigated it was noted in the report that she "fell on wood" which I'm sure is what her parents told the case worker.
It's a shame, she had a poor case worker, but even the good ones are way overworked since they can't hire enough to cover all the cases.
My cousin used to be a social worker and dealt with the agency all the time and says that as bad as they seem now, they are a million times better than they were 10 years ago. It's so sad, the kids who need the most help have the hardest time getting it.

From what I read, the school reported her to CPS at least twice of which one time resulted in CPS going to the residence. The family refused to open the door and CPS can't make them without a warrant. They did petition for a warrant but never followed through.
I don't understand why family and neighbors didn't call. For anyone that has been in public housing, we all know that the neighbors can hear everything.

I know, you are right. It's too late to blame anyone when reality is the parents allowed it to happen.

You are so right! I was a social worker within the foster care system, not ACS but contracted through the city, and I can't even believe the things I saw, the stories I was told and the things that went on.
To this day, it brings me to tears.
