A little worried
Today I went around to 3 different schools in Queens to put my name on their substitute teacher calling list and I was told by all three schools that the budget has been cut so much this year that there is no money for subs!!! Now I'm not so sure if I should leave my job to sub. Has anyone else heard this?

Re: A little worried
That doesn't make sense... schools need subs! I would call down to Court Street... perhaps there is a city wide or region wide list you could get on... but the city teachers on here could advise you better.
Also, are you able to commute to Long Island. You could get on lists with a few districts out here and from what I've heard, most subs that are with a few districts work almost every day.

Re: A little worried
Thank you for responding Karen! I don't think it makes sense either! I was even told by an administrator in a Long Island district that most schools have permanent subs so if you're not one of them then you're not going to work very often
I actually live on Long Island so I would def sub out here, I've put my name on several lists. I just don't know who to believe. All I know is I REALLY don't want to stay at my current job. This is too much

Re: A little worried
I saw in the paper that both Jericho School District and Merrick Elementary District were looking for per diem subs.

Re: A little worried
It's probably because so many teachers got excessed in the city last year. I know in my school we have teachers that lost their positions but they still have to report to school every day until another vacancy shows up. So I would assume the sub spots go to them until they get a position.

Re: A little worried
Where in LI are you? I subbed on LI for 2 years before moving to NC and then taught there for 2 years. I moved back to NY last year and again subbed on LI- working pretty much everyday and neither district I worked for had perm subs! I would be subbing again this year but just got a leave replacement that will pretty much take me to the time that I'm due to have a baby!
FM me for details- I know for a fact that one district is desperate for subs! And you will get called almost everyday
