Re: The Americana in Manhasset

I've lived near the Americana most of my life so this has always been where I've gone when I need to go shopping rather than the mall - they have your basic stores too like JCrew, Sephora, Gap, Banana, etc. etc. but I have to say I am BEYOND SHOCKED reading this thread that people feel like they have to be dressed up to go shopping there! And the criticisms like its so snobby that if you don't you will be looked down at or not helped? I have gone there soooo many times a MESS - in gym clothes or sweats - just to go shopping quick for something and I never ever felt like I was being looked down at and never got less than great service from the stores I was in!

The new restaurants there on the other time...I feel like I am at a fashion show sometimes Chat Icon

OMG! Me too! I loved going there.... My sister and I would do some damage!! Then came the kids and it's probably been 4 years since I've actually shopped there! Chat Icon

I actually remember when the Americana had a JJ Newberry 5 and dime store, a movie theater (Where I saw Chariots of Fire) as well as a supermarket. I grew up around there and I don't live that far from there now.

I am also surpised. I go there a lot - its closer to me than the mall and half the time I go I am in my gym clothes.

I dont think you can judge a book by its cover (or allow someone else to judge you). A woman can walk in there is sweats and be able to afford whatever she wants there, or a woman can walk in wearing a desginer outfit head to toe that she charged and will be paying off for the next 30 years - you just never know!

I spent a lot of time shopping in that area as a child/teenager with my mother. The last time I was in that area was for my Bachelorette Spa day that my friends planned at NuBest, I was in crazy LIW Bridezilla mode so I fit right in Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
My lifelong friend (our moms are friend & we were born 4 months apart) lives in Kings Point & I love her to death but I have not been able to force myself to go up there to see her in about 4 years.
Honestly, I'd rather get a flat at 2am in Wyandanch than drive down the "miracle mile". Every time I'm in that area I feel like I'm going to get killed by some rich, snobby soccer Mom, speeding in her 7,000 pound Range Rover while drinking a Chai and talking on her cell phone.
At least in Wyandanch somebody might stop to help me.
There isn't anything in that mall I can't buy online or get somewhere else.

Re: The Americana in Manhasset

excuse me for saying so - esp. because I am not usually one to stir the pot...BUT...

It seems like a lot of people dont like to shop there at the fear of being judged by the other shoppers/employees...

...but there is a lot judging of the other shoppers/employees by quite a few people in this post!! Chat Icon

You probably weren't refering to me because we posted at almost the same time, but I'm not worried about being judged, I'm embracing my freedom as an American to CHOOSE where I want to be. I'm not saying all wealthy people turn me off, I enjoy shopping in Bridgehampton & Sag Harbor. I just don't care for the overall feel of the north shore, western nassau county demographic. There is a seat for every a$$, we all have choices.

I only go there to go to Tiffany...to buy something silver since that's all I can afford Chat Icon

I've actually never ventured into any of the other stores. I always just parked by Tiffany and walked in there. Maybe one day I'll go there for some window shopping and hit Benihana on the way out! Chat Icon

I was the first to mention getting dressed up. I should have explained that part of the fun of going there, for me anyway, was to do this- that it made it more of a unique shopping experience, that I could be a part of The Gold Coast for a little while. I never met anything bad by it Chat Icon I like the Americana and while I don't go there a lot have had a great time there.

By no means to I think one has to get dressed up and would never judge anyone in pjs or super fancy or anything else.

I feel bad that I mentioned it at all Chat Icon

LOVE that place - But I see no reason to 'get dressed up' to go shopping ther - My money is green and my credit cards are plastic .......just like the woman dressed in head to to Chanel .....- I could care less, and the people WORKING there, are WORKING there - I'm the one BUYING !!! I'll show up in my PJs if I feel like it (well, I would never, but you KWIM)

So the people that Work there are lower class then you? That's kinda how it sounds.

I don't think the problem is with people that work there but the way shoppers might look at you if you went in in Pjs Chat Icon

PS I went to crate and barrel in a pair of jean capris and a shirt I don't care Chat Icon

Chat Icon - You just love to stirl the sh!t don't you? I meant there is NO reason for anyone to be made to feel as if they don't belong there - either by the other patrons OR the employees - Give me a break !! -

Re: The Americana in Manhasset

I shop there very often. I definately know that if you go in there dressed up you are treated differently by the employees. ESPECIALLY in Chanel. some days I go alone (not dressed at all) And when I go with a friend for lunch and shopping I am always dressed. I sware its like right out of the movie Pretty Woman. I had a damaged Chanel bag that needed repair. I ran into the store and they refused to take the bag and fix it. i was told I had to go to the store on madison ave and they would fix it. I went back a week later dressed up and with my DH. Guess what! they took the friggin bag and fixed it. I will never drop $$ in that Chanel ever again.. I go there when i want to buy designer and I go to Green Acers when I dont. But I love Love Love that new resturant there its Asian Fusion yummy!!! Chat Icon

Sorry, I really wasn't stirring for real. That's just the way it came across to me. I always call it like I see it. You said something and all I did was ask how you meant it. Thanks for the clarification.

I understood what you meant... HUGE Gatsby fan here!!!!

BEST. BOOK. EVER.

but i'm too lazy and usually go in sweats lol. Chat Icon but my hair and make up is always done -- but that's more b/c i'm too pale to go anywhere without make up on so i pretty much always put it on before i leave the house hahaha.

i did have a few experiences at tiffany's where no one even asked me if i wanted help and i was there to buy things - it has happened probably four or five times. what can you do? i don't know why i wasn't approached - i was rather young, maybe? all i know is that i went in w/ my MIL once who was approached within FIVE SECONDS lol oh well - maybe next time.

Amen sister! I used to feel "inadequate" when shopping there because I wasnt as thin or as pretty as the people there but then I adopted your attitude and could now give two hoo-hahs what they think! Chat Icon

Re: The Americana in Manhasset

Come on now... I was just kidding!

I have shopped once or twice at the Americana and I have tattoos. Granted not a full sleeve, but nonetheless, I was still helped.

Maybe it was b/c I dressed up that I was helped??

Again, I kid!!!!

I'm sorry, I'm on a roll tonight.
