Malfunctioning Smoke Alarms?

Yes, it's 3am and I'm awake. My darn smoke alarms keep going off. Three times now They are hardwired, all the upstairs ones seem to be going off at the same time (without waking my kids mind you). There is no smoke and no fire. So what do you think the issue is?

This happened to my mother's hardwired one ( it didnt'wake me either) and she called the fire department. She felt the wall & it wasn't hot, but she had to go to work & didn't want to leave it like that, in case there was some electrical problemgoign on in the walls.

They came & checked & said it was most likely dust. I forget if she cleaned it or got a new one.
It is odd that multiple ones are going off though, unless they are set to do that.

That happened to us at 3 am one morning. There was nothing wrong and it was so frustrating that we wound up taking the ones we could reach off the ceilings. We figured there were so many of them that if there were a fire we'd still be ok.
