Why does my DS flail his arms when he sleeps?
My son is 2 months old. When we put him to sleep at night he is contantly flailing his arms and kicking his legs in his sleep.
It looks horrible. I don't know what is wrong -if anything. Did anyone else's child do this?

I have tried swaddling him, but he hates having his arms tucked in and struggles to get them out. I also fear that it makes him hot in this weather.

Its a natural reflex. The moro one I think. It should begin to subside around 3-4 month. Scares the crap out of me, makes me jump when he does that.

Try swaddling. They have no control over their arms and they don't realize its them waving their hands in front of their faces.
DS is four months this week and he's finally starting to wave his arms less.

Re: Why does my DS flail his arms when he sleeps?
This is normal. If it looks twitchy, it's probably the Moro reflex. That sticks around until 4 months or so I think, maybe a little longer.
DS used to thrash his arms and legs terribly at night. It was winter though, so I swaddled him which helped. I didn't think he liked it either, but then I swaddled him tighter, and he would actually smile when he was wrapped up.
Do you have AC? Can you turn it up a little at night and swaddle him?

My DS hated to be swaddled at first, but wouldn't sleep at all if I didn't swaddle him. We had to use a swaddle me - he busted out of the receiving blankets as a newborn in the hospital.

DD is 11 months and sis does that at times. If I could still swaddle her I would. Although she never stayed swaddled for very long. Even whe she was born in the hospital she was th only baby not swaddled.

Re: Why does my DS flail his arms when he sleeps?
Well, last night I wrapped a receiving blanket around my DS and tucked in his arms very tightly.
He slept much better and even looked like he was smiling. He struggled a little in the beginning to get his arms out, but then he gave up, calmed down and fell asleep.
Maybe I will invest in a Swaddle Me.
Thanks severyone for all of the advice and info.
