No. I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I've been in bad relationships before, one was even abusive, but THANKFULLY I had enough common sense not to marry him.
The man I marry is someone who I trust to behave responsibly and maturely when and if our marriage deterioriates. I don't live in la-la land, I am very well aware of divorce rates and that sh!t happens and there is a very real possibility at some point our marriage will end.
But, no matter what happens in our marriage, I do know that there is one thing that will NEVER change, and that is mine, and my husband's moral character. I KNOW that if we were to divorce, no matter what the circumstances, we would behave as responsible, fair, mature adults in working out our finances.
I would have never married my husband if I had ANY doubt about this, and that's the primary reason why I didn't marry any of my prior boyfriends. He may have faults, but this is one trait in him that is enduring - he's shown it in the past with his prior divorce before me, which was done respectfuly and maturely, and I have no doubt that would be the same for us if it were to happen.
And, I don't have to worry quite as much because I have equal control over our accounts, I have my own, well-paying job, with an amazing 401k and pension, and we both have life insurance.

I can support myself on my own- and I am in charge of all the money
so the odds of me being in that position are slim
my Mom saw way too many of her friends end up there- and always told me to be able to take care of myself
if all else fails- I can resort to my back up plan- good old DAD
Same here in every sense- including Dad 
I could never depend on someone else- I don't think I could ever be a SAHM and not work. Luckily- I have the option to work from home a few days a week

I agree- if I ever stopped working- I would still contribute to my IRA and stash a little money aside
but I guess this is much harder if you don't handle the money like I do

Control Freak here for sure. DH would not know what bill to pay or how if something happened to me. I know when everything is due and am in charge of the savings and credit cards too.
We kept everything separate for the first two years of marriage, but I find it easier and more comforting for it to be joined...plus, I usually make more what he makes...last year I made like 4x what he made.

I have a small savings account that is in my name only with my mom as the beneficiary. It's the money that was left after withdrawing my portion of the down payment to our house. I put a few bucks in it here & there but I keep it mainly for savings. I like to know it's there for emergencies.

No. I dont feel the need to. I wouldnt have married someone that I think would leave me high and dry especially when we have a child.
If something were to happen to me, my parents have an insurance policy on me and that $$$ would go to DH and DS. If something were to happen to DH, he has an insurance policy through work whether it be an on or off the job accident (although we will be taking more insurance out on him). We also have alot of equity in our home if need be.
If something were to happen to our marriage, things would be split fairly. Everything we have is together...nothing is seperate...IMO, I feel like that is why a lot of marriages fail.

We have a joint account. DH does the bills. We have life insurance and he has several funds which by law I am the beneficiary and my rights cannot be signed away without my knowledge.
All it would take would be for me to stop or change my direct deposit & I'd be fine.

I have my own accounts for a few reasons.
1. My stock portfolio has been mine since I was 12. Started with my own money and I contributed to it whenever I could. It's almost like my pride and joy. Plus, I always tell DH, if we are ever in a bad spot (lay off, natural distaster, etc) that we will not have to worry at all.
2. I have a savings account for some of the same reasons (Dh knows about it and we will use it from time to time). What really made me do it was a woman in one of my classes. She told us that she had started a "what if" account (after a friend divorced) and it grew to $30K. When she was 56, her daughter was in an abusive relationship and needed to get out/divorced. Her husband began to worry, how will they help her, etc, etc and she pulled out the account.
While I don't think it's right to hide it from your DH, it's not just for divorces.
btw - what was the free gift?

That's not necessarily true. Some policies have a clause that it will not be paid if suicide takes place within 2 years of having the policy.

I do have a savings account of my own...it's menial at this point but that's the idea of it - I've always been independent. My DH knows about it.

I handle the money in our relationship, I am also college educated and capable of supporting myself if need be. I actually opened the account with ameritrade through a suze orman promotion and it is in my name only. But its not a secret from my husband.

This is exactly our situation. My DH has the ability to take money out of the ATM, but that's it...he doesn't know how much is in the bank or how to pay a bill

We have separate and joint accounts.
My husband and I both believe in sharing most of our money but also leaving some money in separate accounts. We are aware of each others money and we respect each others accounts.
We both have family members that something like this has happened too.
