Spinoff to Showering - at what age is it inappropriate to...

be naked in front of your DC. Up until now I still get dressed in my room after I take a shower with DS sitting on the bed. Lately I'm starting to try and not let him see me completely naked because I feel like he stares for a little too long at my chest. At what age do you think it becomes inappropriate to dress in front of your child (i.e. let them see you naked)? Does your answer differ if you have a son versus a daughter? I guess same question would apply for DH but he gets dressed in the bathroom so it isn't an issue.

Thanks!

I have a daughter and while I am not modest or shy I don't think I would ever be naked in front of her.

wow, and i am modest and shy.

Don't get me wrong, I never walk around naked. I'm talking about the time it takes for me to remove the towel and put the bra on and then shirt on. I never ever thought about it until about a month ago and I've been very cautious since to maneuver in such a way that nothing is ever exposed.

I think it's fine to be naked (changing, showering, whatever) in front on your baby. Honestly, I think it's fine until they can start asking questions - then I think the questions should be honestly answered and then maybe you can start teaching about privacy and start avoiding being naked in front of them.

DD is almost 2 and I get dressed in front of her. I'm the same as you...I get out of the shower and put on a robe. I'm not running around naked or anything, but when it's time for me to get dressed, she is there. I haven't given it much thought though...because she usually running around chasing the cat and paying no attention to me Chat Icon

I'm not sure how I would feel if DD was a DS Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would say 2 or 3 for the quick changes.

As far as being completely naked, I'm not comfortable with that. I have friends that shower with their kids but it's not for me.

I have a daughter. I'l probbaly stop when she starts talking and can tell people how fat I am...Chat Icon

Funny story...My cousin has 2 kids and she always says how awful her boobs are and how they hang so low. She look looks fine in a bra. She was changing in front of her 3 year old daughter and the DD asked her if she was going to have boobs like that. My cousin said, yes when you get older you will have boobies, etc... and then her daughter started hysterical crying bc she doesn't want boobs that look like that!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

well I have a son, which is what weirded me out about it when he was looking at me funny. Or just a little too curious. I do think I would have felt different if I had a daughter. I certainly would never want my daughter to see my DH naked!

I still shower with my DD - she will be three in sept. She will shower with my Dh too - it's not weird in our house so she doesn't think twice about it.

Although I am certainly not an exhibitionist by any means I don't think it is a big deal at this age. She isn't asking a million questions yet - and even if she were I would answer them. In my personal opinion I think people are too hung up on nudity in this country.

I have a daughter and I'll be naked around her forever...what's the problem? I still see my Mom naked (even though I wish I didn't lol)....It's not like I walk around naked in front of her, but if I'm getting dressed and she sees something it's not an issue....can't really see it ever becoming an issue.

I saw my mom naked (when she was changing) my whole life, but I don't think my brothers did.

I don't really change in front of DS, but he is still small enough to be confined. I figure I will try to avoid it, but if I don't make a big deal out of it, he probably won't either.

I can totally see this girl on girl.

But would your answer change if your daughter saw your husband naked? What about if you had a son and he saw you naked?

This surprises me a little - I mean my DD sees my DH naked, like I said its pretty normal in our house. I don't think she knows what a P3NIS is - or even that she has seen one...to her it's just mommy and daddy and thats that.

I am totally open to other opinions since I am sure most people don't agree with me...so I am curious what fear you would have about a girl seeing her father naked at such a young age?

I still change in front of DS and he is 2 and have been completely nake infront of him. I actually never gave it a second thought not to. I guess once he starts asking questions then I guess I will stop. I even give the kids a bath together.

Re: Spinoff to Showering - at what age is it inappropriate to...

2 years ago my DS was about 3 or 3 1/2 and he saw me changing and gave me the once over and asked if those were my "lums". It turns out he was watching the Magic schoolbus and they were talking about lungs. Chat Icon Chat Icon I never really paraded around naked in front of him but after that, it seemed funny to change in front of him even though his question was innocent and quite funny. My DD is 4 and I am more lax about it with her since her body will eventually be like mine and she should know. She asks lLOTS of questions about breasts and such, which is fine. I'd also answer them from my sons without reserve but I don't want them overexposed to seeing me nude either. Just like I don't think my DH should be nude in front of my DD but can be a little more lax with the boys.

My answer was assuming that my daughter was old enough to know what it is. It wasn't directed towards your response. For me, once my hypothetical daughter starts being able to pick out mommy and daddy parts and look at them funny I would become uncomfortable with it.

Sexuality is handled differently in different families. I tend to be more shy and conservative which is what dictated that comment. I've never seen my dad's parts. Or, at least I can say that I've never seen my dad's parts when I was old enough to remember.

Re: Spinoff to Showering - at what age is it inappropriate to...

Since DD was about 1, I have pretty much changed in front of her, everyday.
Otherwise, I would have never gotten a shower in.

Just recently, my DH was in the shower, DD took off all of her clothes and hopped in with him.
Now, she has been doing the same with me.

DH doesn't want it to be a regular thing with him, I think he is afraid of the questions.
I really don't care at this point about the showering thing, except it is my only sane quiet time, but hey I look at it like I am killing to birds with one stone.

About changing in front of her, like I said I do it. And I feel comfortable doing it. DH is not comfortable changing in front of her, but if he has to he will

No No No I get that it wasn't directed at me - I just wanted to understand what made you feel that way - I always like to understand the other side even if I don't agree with it. I do agree though that once a kid is old enough to identify certain parts we would certainly be more cautious about nudity in front of her.

I'm far less concerned with DC's seeing someone, including us, naked and far more concerned about many other things they might see/hear... foul language, violence.

ETA: I think as a society we are really "hung up" on nudity. Many other cultures are much more open about nudity and they don't seem to have many of the issues surrounding it that we do. JMO.

After I wrote this i was about to add...I actually never really saw my mother naked either unless by accident. So that probably dictates a lot of my feeling towards it. I really wasn't raised in a family who was open about nakedness.

I have 2 DDs (3ys and 11 months) and dont really have much of a problem changing in front of them. It literally takes under a minute to get dressed and they really dont pay much attention. Also my older DD will sometimes bother my while Im in the shower to ask for something and I dont really think much of it. However DH stopped changing in front of DDs very early on, probably when my oldest was 9 months and I agreed with this.

Right now at 3 years old my DD knows the difference between girls and boys and asks lots of questions which we answer, however I just dont think she needs a visual of DHs parts. I am certainly glad I dont have a visual of my Dads parts! But I really dont judge others, this is just how we are at home....

I don't have a fear of my dd seeing DH naked but we are trying to teach them what is private & what is not. It was easier for us to send the message of "these are your privates." if we were keeping ours private too.

We do have the caveat - "mommy, daddy, grandma or grandpa or a doctor ONLY with one of us in the room can look at your privates if something is bothering you."
