Tell me what you think... Neighbor Related (long)

So, DH and I live in a condo. Our apt is not cheap and our building is mostly comprised of young married couples and young families. There are a few apts that are rented out by the owners though.

A few months ago, we got a new neighbor next door-- a young single guy. We assume he is a renter because the apt was not for sale. We share one wall, and he doesn't have anyone on the other side of him-- so, any noise-- we are the only ones who hear it.

Even now and then, but now-- like every day-- we constantly hear his music playing. It's mostly his base, but it's a low murmur and very annoying. I am not kidding when I say the sound of bass haunts me-- and I think I hear it all the time. It's never for long periods of time-- but, it's every day for like 20 to 30 mins. We knocked on his door months ago-- and had planned to leave a note just to tell him that we can hear everything.

Last night at 3 30 AM, I was woken up by his music. We usually only hear it when we are in our LR, not in our bedroom. I made DH knock on the door, he didn't answer-- but he turned the music off.

Today, I left a note on his door--- it's done already, but I wanted to get opinions to see if anyone thinks it's too harsh. I didn't want to knock on his door and talk to him because I KNOW I would sound like a total uber b!tch even though I didn't mean to. Here's the note...

Dear Neighbor:

We have held off on letting you know sooner, as we didn’t want to be “those neighbors”, but after last night’s very loud music playing at 3:30AM, we had to call attention to how your music playing affects us.

We hear your music every time you play it. We know it’s not generally for long periods of time, but it’s been happening almost every day lately. As you can imagine, it’s very annoying to hear noise from another apartment when you are trying to relax at home. Being woken up last night by your music is really unacceptable, and I am sure if you were in our position, you would feel the same.

We are asking nicely, if you can please be cognizant of the volume of your music, lower your bass settings or even perhaps move your speakers to a wall you don’t share with another apartment. We thank you in advance for your consideration.

I don't think it's too harsh, it's polite and it gets the message across.

I hope he cooperates!

I think that's a good note. I hope it works.

My neighbor plays his music loud sometimes but knows it and told me to bang on the wall if it's really bad. I always thought it was cool he put it out there first.

I think it's extremely polite. If it were me, i probably would've banged on the wall and screamed to lower the effffing music Yours was definitely the better approach!

I think your note is fine. I hope he complies.

we share a wall w/our neighbors and a few months ago we kept hearing loud bass noises. it was really annoying (and was happening a few times a week, only at night). so I knocked on their door. turns out it was a home theatre system and they had the speakers mounted on the "common" wall. they were very sorry about it and we haven't heard a peep since then. they're a very nice young couple!

I don't think it is harsh at all. You were very polite in telling him that you don't appreciate their noise. I hope he listens. Let us know what happens

i think the note was very well written and polite.

however, the only thing i think is that since it was only one late night time i would have held off alittle longer, to see if it would happen again.

hopefully it wont happen again and he will take your note into cosideration. good luck!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts--- I know he took the note, and I can't imagine we'll hear anything from him. I guess we;ll just have to see how quiet it was.

Not harsh at ALL!!! I really hope he cooperates. I have tennants that live above me that have kids constantly running from room to room, so I know that haunting feeling.

I think you went about the situation in the right way. Keep us updated as to how he reacts & if he cooperates.
