Re: Cord Blood Banking

We have decided to do this. The possible benefits out weight not doing it since it is within our budget. I hope it is the silliest money we have ever spent! We went with Viacord for a number of reasons and I'm confident in that decision.

We are doing it with Viacord After my doctor sat down with us and told us 3 babies were cured in their practice alone from cord blood. I didn't do it with my first but this baby has a 80% chance of helping #1 if we ever need it.

there is a public bank that we will donate to that is free. if my baby ever needs blood, he will get it from the public bank. you don't need your own blood.

we have no major diseases in either of our families so the costs don't outweigh the benefits

we have decided to do this basically b/c i am a nursing assistant in pediatrics and i see what many of these terminally ill children go through and I really hope that this littlw insurance plan will help us god forbid we should ever need it I have looked at a few different companies and have chosen cryocell

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We did this for our DD and used Cryocell. We figured it was worth the investment b/c of tall the things it can help cure now and potentially in the future. I would be very upset if I didn't do it and something happened. It is like buying your life insurance policy.

We will do it for DS in Sept. as well and through Cryocell.

My sister has used Cryocell for all three of her kids as well.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

After a ton of research we decided it was not for us and would definitely not bank with a private company. If we do decide to bank, it will be with a public bank.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

so both my former co-worker and I are pregnant (we're both neuroscientists)....

she said it best while speaking to my other pregnant friend:
'well, if you're a scientist, and genuinely understand stem cells and how they can be applied to hundreds of diseases, there is no way you could decide to NOT bank your blood'

it's true. fine, there are a couple dozen pediatric diseases or so that cord blood is currently being used as life-saving treatment. (right now, only pediatric diseases can be treated becuase banking began only recently.) But that's the tip of the iceberg.

Our kids will hopefully live 80 years... in the next 8 decades, there will likely be HUNDREDS of diseases, including heart disease, one of the biggest killers, that cord blood will be the cure.

As medical researchers, my friend and I joke that we have taken a oath of poverty. we're VERY underpaid (Starting salary below 40k) considering the tremendous amount of education/training required (greater than 9 years). Despite our tight finances, we're both coughing up the 2k for banking. we're both finding a way.

We both selected CBR... it's comperable in reputation and research to viacord, but its storage facility is in a safer location (middle of nowhere arizona vs right near the ohio river (which periodically floods!))

Re: Cord Blood Banking

there's an issue w/ depending upon a public bank, though. I've been informed that they do not do pick-ups and collections 24/7 like private companies... so if you want to donate yet you give birth at 4AM sunday morning, your blood may go uncollected.

I'm not 100% sure of this, but definitely look into that if that's the route you're considering.....

Re: Cord Blood Banking

In terms of CBR, I was concerned about their use of the bags that the FDA recalled and the different system for processing the cord blood (axp not sepax). Has anyone heard what they had to say about use of the recalled bags?

Re: Cord Blood Banking

I didn't know about that recall... thanks for the FYI (I will say I received my pack just last week, which is months after the recall, so everything is mercifully fine as for us)

for what's behind the recall, there doesn't seem to be a defect with the manufacturing, it was just the release of a few lots of bags pior to endotoxin (basically q/c) testing... I agree with you, it's concerning... but as long as it's caught quickly....

as for the different system, I'm fine with it... who's to say which system is better? no one! both companies have their own unique processing. I tried to research the differences, but there are only ads on how each is fantastic... no unbiased 3rd party research on the topic.... so in my personal conclusion, it's a wash between the 2 companies. At least both companies have great histories in sucessful transplants.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

definitely true about both having successful transplants! I was wondering what you have heard about the processing system b/c the majority of companies use sepax. personally, i preferred a company that was publicly traded too. there are so many factors that go into making this decision. I spent so long on the phone with both companies asking tons of questions!

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We did it w/ my DS (CBR)and will also be doing it with baby #2...The little bit of piece of mind it gives me (god forbid we should ever need it) was enough to convince me...Science really seems to be headed in that direction and I know that you only have one shot at cord blood- we figured it into our budget and made it happen...I also know that siblings can be a match for my 1st's cord blood but I am still going to collect again...

I'm supposedly a medical researcher, so I decided to delve a bit deeper after your question and see what research there is out there comparing the 2 collection systems....

there is only ONE article, and it's in korean:
AXP slightly better Wouldn't put it past big pharma if CBR funded this favorable article... but we'll never know.

There is literally NO NIH (publicly) funded research comparing these two proprietary methods. I swear I hate pharmaceutical companies. Everything is so secretive. When the only data coming out for a drug or method is from the company that will profit billions from its success, you MUST wonder about the data a bit... especially the data they do NOT present. (My professional experiences with drugs undergoing FDA approval just stress this
point even more...)

After doing this research, I feel like all of us who are in contract with CBR or Viacord have made deals with the devil Chat Icon

sorry to be a downer.... I still suspect viacord and CBR are both decent and reasonably trustworthy companies... it's just they're big pharma and they apparently behave that way too... which makes me suspicious

yeah, you can tell this is such big business for these companies and I'm sure they are making a boatload of money of every sign up. that wasn't going to stop me from banking though.

We are doing it through Viacord. Although it's a lot of money up front we just couldn't say no to doing it. Although we may never need it (god willing) we like the idea that's if there if we do. It's like an insurance policy, good to have but you hope you don't need it. I just feel better knowing it will be there if something ever happens.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

we are again with CBR.
after speaking to my ob and several other dr.s about it who have no benefit in whether or not I do it, told me to go with CBR and that yes for our future and benefits it will provide for my child are def worth it even if there are no known diseases in the family, things can arise.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

We are definitely considering Viacord - dh and I just want to research this a bit more.

The benefits definitely outweigh the costs and to think of how it could possibly help is amazing.

How early in your pregnancy do you have to arrange for Viacord to collect the cord blood? Is this something I need to make a decision really soon about? I'm 7w0d right now...

Thanks!
