scary trend

i am seeing more and more ladies on this board discussing clomid and i am so surprised, since i always thought that was a serious infertility drug.

is this a new trend - for OBs to prescribe clomid?

Unfortunately yes... there was a rather heated debate here a couple of weeks ago, which is why I now keep my opinions about it to myself or with my ladies on the IF board.

It is very scary that doctors are prescribing Clomid like it's asprin or something. Especially without properly monitoring the paitent.

I've been noticing it, too.

As MrsRbk said, it seems like it's being doled out without much thought to proper diagnosis or monitoring. Myself, I was put on Clomid because I don't ovulate on my own. Period. But when I was on it, I had extensive bloodwork and sonograms being done accordingly.

It's really scary to me that it's the "new thing", because it really is a SERIOUS fertility drug with serious side effects...and longterm health effects if not used properly.

Very scary.

I don't understand it either. Clomid is a serious drug and docs are handing it out like candy...

YEP!! I couldnt believe how quickly my dr said, "wanna try clomid?"

My sis was a PA in ob/gyn and she said its used VERY often!!

I hate that i have a RX burning a whole in my wallet bc i know i will fill it if this cycle doesnt work (we are doing OPK this cycle only).

It is. My gyn gave me a rx for 5 cycles in April and said I'll see you in Oct.

I had no idea how serious this med was. When I was told I couldn't believe it was so carelessly given out like nothing.

I took the script to my RE and he says the dosage wasn't even enough for me. Imagine I would have been taking these pills and they wouldn't have even worked. It's crazy.

i've noticed too and it's very scary. I hope doctors are ruling everything else out before going this route - it's something that should be taken very seriously.

Clomid is a really serious drug--- it's not meant to be taken by someone early on in TTC... there is a maximum amount of cycles that you should be on it in a LIFETIME, to give you an idea of the severity of it.
When you're on it, you should be monitored very closely, as PPs have said. My RE said we wouldn't do any more than 6 cycles of clomid, though the lifetime maximum I believe is 12. I ended up doing 3, before moving on.
It can thin out your lining, which can make your embryo have trouble implanting, and can also lead to early miscarriage when not monitored properly. You can also develop cysts after being on it.

Others do, but they are more frequently related to emotions. About 10 percent of those who use Clomid will have a multiple pregnancy (twins). Clomid can cause hostile fertile mucous and thins the uterine lining in over 30 percent of the women who use it. The hostile mucus kills sperm, and the thin uterine can prevent implantation or cause an early miscarriage.

now THAT is insane!! so you would have been taking this really really strong medication and who KNOWS how your body would have responded?? not only would that have been a waste of time and $$, i would think it could be seriously dangerous to your health!

Yes, I was prescriped clomind by my OB/GYN....it did make me ovulate and did get me pregnant. Not sure if I lost the baby b/c I was not being monitored....I am now going to go see an RE so that I can be monitored, even if it's just for my own sanity. I know I would feel better.
