Midwife?
Can someone please explain what they do? Are you getting one? How much do they cost?
I was talking to another military wife yesterday and she said that next time she wants a more personal feel. Being in the military we get 1 out of 4 doctors on the day of delivery. They work hard to introduce you to all 4 but you just never know. Her doctor on call the day of her delivery was a doctor she had never met.

Midwives give you one on one care. Very personal. Your prenatal visits are about 30-45 minutes with your midwife. They can order any necessary tests you may need. All midwives do require a back up doctor (OB) for anything questionable.
You midwife will be with you throughout your pregnancy, even at your birth.
There are some midwives who have their own practice and some who work for docs.

I will have a midwife and not if all goes as plan, will not have a medicated birth and will deliver in a birthing center.
I recommend watching "The Business of Being Born" It is a documentary about natural child birth and the industry that labor and delivery has become in this country. It is definitely a bit biased, but the facts are indeed facts, so I would check it out if you get a chance.

Where is the nearest birthing center on Long Island? Is it located in a hospital? I know the closest mid wife for me would be Michelle Mayer in Port Jeff; I believe.

Since I am not pregnant yet, I have not researched the centers as of yet, but I believe there is one called Long Island College Hospital Birthing Center. I know there is also one in Brooklyn, and one in the city.

I plan on using a midwife this time around. My birth with my daughter went horribly, and I know it would have been a much better, different experience with a midwife. I want more personal & much more natural care next time around.

You could also check out www.pushedbirth.com
It is really interesting. Midwifes have lower section rates and much much lower episitomy rates. They give you more personal care and really cheer for you to let your body do what your body does.

There is a birthing room in NUMC that the midwives use. It has a tub if you want a water birth, which I do not, but they let you labor in the jacuzzi if you feel like it. I think my midwife even comes to your house and helps you labor at home. I only say this because before I had my m/c I was in her office and she was leaving to go to someones home before they decided to got to the hospital.
