I'm devastated

I went to Florida this week and boarded my dog Jameson. She hasn't been putting on weight so the vet suggested I gave her a deworming pill. I did, I came back yesterday and she was 2 pounds skinnier than when she went in there, was lathargic and just wasn't her peppy self. It was really upsetting me that she was this sick, limping, not strong enough to jump in the car (she's a pit for godsake! she has so much energy) I had a vet appointment to get her 2nd dose and the vet discovered that she was severely dehydrated (she wouldnt eat or drink all morning and she ususally steals O'Malley's food) and she was having alot of diahrea and he has suspicion she has giardia. O'Malley had that 6 months back and it destroyed me emotionally. now she's going through this and we don't know what is causing this. I feel so sick inside to see her like this, I can't help but cry all day. I won't be able to see her till tomorrow hopefully. now I have to go around the yard and try to see if she pooped on the ground, remove it and bleach the spots. Now my other 2 could catch this. I am drained :(

Isn't Guardia caused by dogs eating their own poop also? Have you noticed that going on?

I know she doesn't eat poop. none of my dogs do this. however she was in the kennel for the week and I'm wondering if maybe a dog did this on the floor and she sniffed it or something. The vet also said she could have got this from the shelter we got her from. that sometimes it takes awhile for it to appear. that's what they suggested with my dog O'Malley when this occurred. I have 2 more hours until i can call to see if the test results came back and to see how she is. I miss my baby already

Re: I'm devastated

Giardia is super fixable. If that's what she has, she'll be fine with medication. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I'm devastated

no real word on her yet. i'm waiting for the call.
i called last night and he said she was doing better and eating and drinking but she didn't give him a stool sample at that time so he couldn't tell.

Re: I'm devastated

well she's home with me now. the results are still not back because she took a long time to poop so we'll find out probably tomorrow. she is completely hydrated, and happy. she's a little sleepy but she's doing 100 times better. thanks everyone for your prayers.

Re: I'm devastated

well it's not giardia, he gave me 2 things of meds to give her and if it doesn't clear up (meaning her discolored loose poop) then they're gonna have to take more tests and see why she's not gaining much weight. we got her at 29 pounds (terrible, she was skin and bones) and shes 36 now but that's still not enough you see her ribs but she won't gain anymore weight. she eats alot but poops alot. i dont get it haha

Do you think it may be food allergies? They can develope all of the sudden? Ask about hills Z/D non allergy food. Just a shot in the dark. I am so sorry that dog is absolutely gorgeous Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
