Clapping Hands?

What age did your child learn to do this on command? DD is 9 months and shows no sign that she can. But I also don't show her how that often, should I be?

This was going to be part of what my ped talked about with me - lol.

He asked if he was clapping - I said no. Now - all I do - all day long - is clap in front of the poor kid!

He looks at me like I'm nuts - by the way!

Kaitlyn has been clapping for a few weeks now. She is a clapping fiend as of the last few days.

But keep in mind, she's still not crawling! (I think our kids are case in point of how all kids develop differently and at their OWN pace!)

ETA: DD is 9 months old.

I keep forgetting you have a new avatar! Love how you & Diana are always the first to respond to my posts-- do we have a cosmic connection?

I agree about the milestones, definitely! I just wonder if I'm supposed to be clapping more to show her (probably!), because I don't do it regularly.

I was just looking thru my oldest son's 1st year calendar and saw he did it at 8.5 months old. My youngest is 8 months old now and not yet. He has tried but not really getting it. He does clap two objects together though.

The best is - the ped asks me "Does he pick up food with his fingers" - I say "No!" ---

We leave the office - and then I realize - I never really give him a chance to pick them up with his fingers since I'm always feeding it to him.

Poor kid's getting a bad rap because his mommy doesn't want to clean up a big old mess!

Alex claps, and waves, and pops bubbles - and does the "banging her spoon" part of the highchair song. But not necessarily when I tell her to, sometimes yes and sometimes no.

She's over 9 months old, and she isn't crawling yet eigher - which is fine by me, BTW!

Doesn't he pick up Cheerios (or something similar) with his fingers??? That should count!

5 months old he started, which was early. That is one thing he does consistantly every day....all day

DS tries to clap a few times, but doesn't do it over 5 times each try. It only comes from the fact that he absolutely LOVES the song 'If you're happy and you know it clap your hands' So, technically he doesn't clap a long time, but when we applaud he does too and laughs hysterically. He's 7 1/2 months.

But, he's not a big fan of sitting, so who the heck knows about these 'milestones'

DD just started last month, she was 10 months...sometimes when you ask she does it, sometimes she dosent.

matthew is almost 9 months and I could make myself crazy when comparing him to other 9 month old babies. He rolled VERY late. He is only now showing any remote interest in the possible thought of maybe crawling. But the clapping he does. I worked on it with him for what seemed like months with singing. I'd clap his hands together for him. Eventually he learned to open up his palms to make the clapping noise. Then one day after I stopped he kept doing it. Now granted he probably only does it like maybe 5 times but if I say "yayyyyy" he'll do it. It'll come with time. The new thing we're working on is picking food up. He still grabs with the fist. But these things could drive me crazy and I wish I wouldn't compare him to other babies.

7 months.... but I'd been clapping at her for every minor accomplishment since she was born, lol.

ds started clapping few weeks ago but he has seen me clapping a lot, everytime he finished his meal (fruits, cereal or veggies) I clapped and he was so happy

DS was 9 months when he started and DD is 8.5 months and she still hasn't done it. Me and DS show her every day and nothing. She will hold onto my fingers and clap my hands or put an object into each hand and bang them but not her own hands. She prefers when you do it for her

Matthew was about 9-10 months.
Christopher was about 11 months.

7 mos or so. But it is something his Nona has been teaching him since I brought him home from the hospital...

Sydney just started clapping her hands the other day - she's 7 1/2 months old.

Thanks for the replies. I feel guilty b/c I really don't clap much with her, so how would she know to do it? I celebrate other ways with her, acting like a fool jumping, yelling, etc.

Lucas started at about 8 months (but I have to go back and look...I caught a pic when we did one of his monthly shots)

Since then he has started to learn to associate it with certain things...like when he's happy playing he will clap, when he's finished eating and we say all done he claps and when we clap 8 out of 10 times he does too.

I credit daycare...I feel like he picked this and dancing up there. (He bops when you sing or he hears music) otherwise I wouldn't know where to begin teaching him. I don't do it enough in any given day.
