Re: Anyone here wished they lived somewhere else?

DH and I are planning to retire off LI, mostly due to the cost of living and not wanting to deal with winter weather in old age so we'll probably be moving for sure.

Pros
His family is here (which has it's own pros and cons)
A few good friends living nearby
We both have decent jobs with good pay
Some fun stuff like the wineries on the North Fork
Familiar foods

Cons
Taxes - going up all the time
Getting harder to get homeowners insurance as more companies drop LI
Congestion - going to a lot of the events just isn't worth the hassle
Litter - too many pigs on LI that dump their bottles, papers and cigarette butts on the side of the road - we lived in MA for several years and it was much cleaner
No mountains (I'm not a beach person)
Too much same-ness. In MA we could go to the coast, the mountains, see historical stuff, etc. and there was still so much to do and see within a 3 hour drive. Here, you're trapped on an island - from Suffolk where we live, it's almost 2 hours just to get over the bridge and off the island, in traffic on top of it. I feel like we've "been there - done that" over and over again for many of the LI options.
And the other cons that have been mentioned - high cost of living and such.

I love LI b/c my family is there and there is great shopping on LI.

But I am glad I moved b/c there is no way we could live there like we do here (Australia). In fact I don't know if I could live in the US again. I would like to move closer, like Europe or something, and I hope that we will be there by this time next year.

Re: Anyone here wished they lived somewhere else?

i have never felt like a new yorker and cant wait to leave even though ive lived here all my life....

pros: beaches, state parks, ANYTHING you need is nearby and in great quantities, family here, NYC hype

cons: cost of living, stressful lifestyle, traffic/congestion, rudeness/inconsideration of people to each other(no offense), materialism, NYC hype(not for me)

Life seems like and endless struggle here even if you make a healthy salary and live modestly, i never felt like i fit in here.

Yeah, I feel the same way. My quality of life in the UK is much better than we could have on LI. Although houses here are expensive, in many ways the cost of living is cheaper and we have lots of amazing benefits (lots of holiday time, 12 months maternity leave, National Health (which btw, I do pay for, its not free) I don't know if I would want to live in the states again after living abroad for such a long time (this is my 9th year here) But I do love to visit LI a lot!!!

Re: Anyone here wished they lived somewhere else?

we toyed with buying acerage in Tennessee or some other low cost rural area, but DH is doing great in business right now & I'd rather keep working & be able to buy a few acres on the north fork & deal with the LI prices.
I've never lived anywhere but here & while it sounds romantic to start somewhere new I really love having my extended family & our friends around. I think I'd be miserable without them, its not so easy to make new friends in rural areas.
DH would love to live here & have a place in Florida, his family is there. I'm not a big fan of Florida.

I love Long Island - but I have an irrational fear of Tsunami's - so I get nervous living on this thin strip of land.

But having my family nearby, the gorgeous change in seasons, the nearness to NYC, the beautiful beaches and a million other things make it very desirable.

but everytime I got close- I realized that I love it here and I am a true New Yorker

Same here, for richer or poorer (taxes!)...I'm a NYer at heart. Chat Icon

YES!!!!!! I wish I lived on a farm or in PA with a big huge house and lots of property. But that will never happen. We would love to have a weekend country house one day so I guess that is a nice compromise.Chat Icon

Re: Anyone here wished they lived somewhere else?

I am a NY girl through and through. I grew up on SI, now live in Queens, and just bought a house in Nassau County.
DH and I would hate to be away from our families, and love Manhattan. I would rather spend the money to live here than live somewhere else for less.

Re: Anyone here wished they lived somewhere else?

The only other place i could see myself living is Boston - i grew up there and my family is there and i love that city.
I've been in NY for 13 years and have grown to love this area as well.
I agree with other posters - you pay for the luxury of living here. yes you can live elsewhere for cheaper, but you dont' have the benefits.

Pros
- anything you want, anytime
- amazing variety of people.
- all the culture you could want, no matter what your tastes are.
- Food!

Cons
- Congestion - there's so many people everywhere, all the time! i'd like to go out to eat and not have to wait for an hour to get a table.
- I'm also still worried about the terrorist threat, i can't help think of it every day as i come into the city on the train.
- High cost of living
- materialistic people

me too! We were SoCal (San Diego) and it was only family that brought us back, so we plan to retire there (or depending on situations - move when the kids are in college - hopefully sooner)

we had real estate success there and we got our money out just in time for it to lower and we are hoping to find some investment properties there soon.

cleaner, friendlier, not as crowded, lots to offer.

LI pros - family, food and jobs

Re: Anyone here wished they lived somewhere else?

I lived in Chicago after college. If I could convince DH, I would live there.

I used to travel for work and "lived" in a city for 3 months. I have lived in these states:

Ohio
South Dakota
Colorado
Georgia
Tennessee
New York
Arizona
North Carolina
South Carolina
Massachusetts

My favorites were Colorado - I was in Littleton; Spearfish, South Dakota (to visit not to live); Arizona - Scottsdale and my all time favorite Chicago.

I also wouldnt mind living in Northern VA. I would pretty much move anywhere except Florida. Not a fan of the humidity or heat.
