If you get too much money back then you are giving the gov't your money throughout the year for free.
with rising food and gas costs, wouldn't you want that money in your weekly paycheck?
Technically, yes, you would ideally want $0 for your return. However, most people see it as "extra" money, and use the refund as sort of a short-term savings account. An extra $100 a week you don't notice, but an extra $5000 at the end of the year is a big chunk of money.
But why wouldn't you just do that and put it into a savings account than lend it to the government for free?? With no interest

We can't save for anything so we prefer a big return at the end and then we put it towards bills. We are trying to correct the situation.
It really wouldn't give us that much back a week anyway so this has been working out just fine for now. Until DH officially owns the business and then we will probably owe

hopefully nothing, we always owe the state so whatever we get back from federal we'll just use to pay state.
We changed our filing status so the least amount is taken out & started direct depositing the old amount taken out for federal into an ING...so we have the money saved to pay if we need to & I didn't loan the gov my hard earned money for free again. Now we get interest on our money, something we'll never get from the IRS. Plus if we want to buy something big for the house or whatever we access to our money year round, although we really never touch it.

We got a good amount, more than the poll. On the one hand, I hate that we gave the gov't so much of our money, but on the other hand, we would not have been disciplined enough to save all that money. We are going to be buying another house soon, so it's handy. But for next year, I am going to try and get back less.

Way more than that poll. We kinda like getting the big check back because DH and I $uck at saving. We also realized that we never changed our status when we got married so we are both still claiming zero single.
